Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role is a mixture of tasks from assessing sub contractor payments, walking around site, plant allocations, procuring sub contractors and materials and reporting financial data.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I feel fulfilled in my day to day tasks while also having lots of opportunities presented to me. This gives me lots of room to grow. The block placement at Leeds College of Building has allowed me to form genuine connections and friendships with my fellow apprentices. Lastly I feel the annual leave is very generous allowing me to take time for my wellbeing and hobbies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes. Before joining I knew very little about excel and construction. BAM paid for me to attend an excel course which greatly improved my skills which have been further developed by colleagues taking time to help further develop my skills.
I've learnt a lot about the construction process by being able to talk to and walk round site with the engineers which has been further aided by talking to other colleagues such as planners and project managers. This has helped to give me a great overview of the construction process.
All the quantity surveyors in my team have showed me the basics and are still continuing to help me grow and develop. They will always answer any questions I may have or inform me of anything that is useful/ I need to know.
Last but not least the apprenticeship has been an excellent way for me to develop my soft skills such as organisation and communication.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
From the beginning I've understood what will happen throughout the apprenticeship and who to contact if I have any queries.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive lots of support from the team around me and have already attended additional training courses.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
All the lecturers have industry experience and are supportive throughout the process.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
While the qualification doesn't give direct hands on experience its very useful for learning about terminology and processes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes. There's a sports and social club and group called Future BAM which do monthly site visits around the UK and Ireland. Both of these are available to all employees.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The initial college block is an excellent way to be eased in to the apprenticeship and allows for excellent networking and friendship opportunities. The day to day work is engaging and interesting because everyone is so friendly and happy to explain any new concepts. Lastly there's many perks such as the travel and opportunities across the UK.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
Show who you are to the best of your ability, at this stage knowledge about the role your applying for isn't the most important thing (even though it does help). If your able to demonstrate desired soft skills through the application process that will really help you.
Secondly, be prepared to live away from home, its a possibility that can happen and the more prepared you are for it then the easier it will be.
