Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work alongside more experienced Project Managers to support internal company projects, for example implementing software into one of the company's global offices. This involves speaking to people in different teams, such as technology, security and compliance or business teams. I might set up an online call in Microsoft Teams and would record the actions, any risks and issues. Within the first year of my role, I was running a small project myself and responsible to track the finances for the project budget and create weekly reports to senior stakeholders.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love the variety of the programme. I have worked on several very different projects. I get to speak to people all over the business and also work with people in external companies that might supply software. The apprenticeship set up is such that I spend roughly 4 days a week working and 1 day a week on theory and this balance has really supported my development. I really feel that I make a difference to the projects I work on and that my efforts are appreciated by my colleagues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed lots of soft skills, such as communication and negotiation. I have improved on my prior experience with Microsoft programmes like PowerPoint. I have learnt lots of new skills, like tracking budgets and how to create and manage an integrated project plan. I have gained lots of knowledge about compliance and regulations.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship course was very well structured. It was clear from the start which topics we would cover and when. The 18 months is roughly split into 4 sections and at the end of each one, we would give a presentation to show what we'd learnt and how we had applied the theory in day-to-day work. That presentation was very clearly structured; we are given a model so it's very clear what we need to present.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Internally, my department at Computacenter is set up so that there are several more senior staff I can go to for support. I have a mentor and I use them to check my understanding of theory and also how this works in practise, for example I spoke to them about how Quality Management is taught by the Association for Project Managers (APM) and how it works in reality at my company. I feel I've been given a gradual increase in responsibility in the projects I work on. This means it was not overwhelming at the start but I do feel challenged. My line manager is very supportive about making sure I have time to prepare for apprenticeship deadlines.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Realise are the training provider and they have provided really good workshops and webinars to cover the syllabus. They gave good revision sessions in the lead up to the APM exam I sat (an extra qualification, separate to the apprenticeship qualification). I have a 'Training & Development Officer' (TDO) who has monthly progress reviews with me. Whenever I've asked for support or clarification from the TDO or academic tutors, they've been quick to reply to me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The theory really does relate to my day to day work. For example, you learn about a RACI: a document to track stakeholders (who is responsible or accountable for tasks) and this kind of document really is useful on a project so that everyone knows what is expected of them. The apprenticeship training is provided through online classes with apprentices in other organisations so I also get to hear from them how a particular way of working is for them and I feel I am gaining knowledge and understanding from this as well.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes there are lots of opportunities at Computacenter to take part in volunteering, charitable activities or talk at recruitment events. There are groups within Computacenter for example we have a 'generations network' to bring people of different ages together for networking. The Early Careers team create social networking opportunities. My department has some social events, like meals together, but I also feel welcome to set up my own.

Would you recommend Computacenter to a friend?
Yes

The company offers lots of opportunities to develop your skills, try something new and also there is a real emphasis on looking after your work-life balance.
