Overall Rating

4.4 /5

The Overall Rating is the average of all the ratings given in each category. We take those individual ratings and combine them into one final score!

4.5/5 - Overview of Role
5/5 - Skills Development
4.2/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Role varies on placement - sometimes data architecture work, sometimes data analysis and reporting, other times is programming and completing data science work. The variation and being to try different areas within data has been fantastic for me to get a flavour of which areas interest me for my exit role.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Really good opportunities and variety within work, though support from an early careers/functional lead perspective could be better alongside their organisation and timeliness when asking for work outside of placement scope

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
When I started the apprenticeship I didn't know what data analysis was but came in open-minded and now 3 years later I've worked on many different areas within data analysis and have grown and developed both my skills and perspectives massively within the field

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Generally well organised when we are in placements, though placement transitions don't seem to be smooth or well organised when we begin transitioning or we select preferences for our next placements. Early careers/functional lead support could be better here, alongside when they ask us to complete tasks/work outside of our placement scope and often expect this in very short timescales - organisation within these elements could be massively improved
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots of support from placement teams, some good support from early careers/functional leads when needed. Also receive good support from university skills coaches on that side.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Quarterly review meetings to check competency progress, progression within university course, wellbeing/concerns and barriers affecting progress. University skills coaches are available to email whenever support is needed and usually respond quite quickly
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Most modules within university course don't feel massively relevant to the roles we complete in a theory vs practice perspective. Some elements are useful and crop up in the workplace or are useful to be aware of when completing work, though I think most of these elements could just be learnt/developed whilst working and through practice
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Lots of extra curricular/STRETCH opportunities to get involved in, also different team social events within placements (e.g. football/cricket friendly matches and team events out playing bingo or going for meals) - plenty to pick and choose from

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Lots of support, a very friendly and inclusive workplace, lots of different opportunities and developments on offer, with very supportive managers and teams
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be patient with the lengthy application process, try your best and go in with an open mind - you may not be offered the role you applied for but you may be offered another area instead (I applied for finance but was offered a data analysis role and it has been the best shift in my career path that I didn't even see coming!)
