Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I get put into a team from day 1 working on high tech projects for Leonardo. I am treated like any software engineer in the team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have become a much better software engineer than what I can teach myself or from the theory university could provide.
I have gained soft skills too such as presentations, teamwork and confidence

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The apprenticeship scheme at Leonardo is very well set up, with years of experience
The university side of it is less well put together, with issues in courses and teaching. Some knowledge has still been gained from it though.
I find I learn a lot more by doing things on the job anyways though
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Leonardo is happy to support apprentices with any questions / support they need
Every team member I have had has been very good at explaining concepts in software and answering questions I have. Everyone wants to help you
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Lecturers try their best at answering questions
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I think I learn a lot more being a software engineer than university has done in trying to teach the concepts of what its like to be a software engineer
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, I've been involved in STEM events, helping inspire school kids to take up a career in STEM or an apprenticeship (or both)
Work has provided some social events too

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
Yes
Why?
A lovely place to work where you get to work on really cool tech
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
Talk about all the extra curriculum things you have done, I believe they matter more than your grades. An interviewer can learn a lot more about you by all the stuff you've done outside of lessons than a letter on a piece of paper.
Even if you've done activities not related to the job e.g. a sports team, you can talk about the soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, dedication
If you've gone out of your way to experience things related to what your applying for, that is great to! e.g. programming your own website/game, building something, attending engineering sessions
