Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
A fantastic role with such a varied scope of work thanks to the placement structure at Transport for London, meaning apprentices and graduates rotate around different teams and use their expertise interchangeably, developing a comprehensive understanding of such a large organisation.
Day-to-day tasks can vary but many managers aim to give you your own discrete project to work on, which often involves organising meetings with different teams, distilling input into documents/presentations, and playing your part in meeting our ambitious green/sustainability objectives. Site visits also take place from time to time with a wealth of other fun activities organised by the Colleague Network Groups (like extra-curriculars!)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Programme has been really enjoyable so far and I've felt supported every step of the way. As with all work, there can be some repetitive tasks but colleagues are conscious of this and strive to ensure that apprentices have a varied portfolio of work which can also be balanced alongside university study. Honestly, most of the learning takes place in the workplace, particularly with an organisation as notable and broad-ranging as TfL with a huge range of in-house expertise too.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, mostly skills around engaging with stakeholders and being in the working environment. My existing technical knowledge (e.g., Geography A-Level and volunteering) has helped enormously for the transition to this role. We do track our KSBs as apprentices but this seems a little arbitrary given the length of the programme.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Super clear organisation and support available when needed, alongside the autonomy to choose placements and where you work in the organisation (after the first 6 months).
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Huge amount of support - financial and non-financial rewards and employee benefits at TfL are substantial and cover many aspects of everyday life. More importantly, everyone who I have met so far, particularly in the sustainability space, has been so welcoming and always approachable/available to talk if you require support and even to learn more about their current projects and work.
Work-life balance is generally excellent with overtime strongly discouraged for apprentices and graduates, while it's easy to fit in personal appointments or medical needs around work due to the flexibility offered on many placements (including part-time working from home).
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Support here is generally above adequate, contact time is only one day a week but that's expected given our busy schedule. The organisation from the trainer provider hasn't been nearly as good as at TfL, with some challenges in communication and timetabling, but this has mostly settled and we are into the rhythm of university days, which can be long/tiring - this is especially true during weeks when assignments are issued and your workload on-the-job may be higher than usual.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Yes, definitely some transferrable technical knowledge here - not all relevant but this is expected as we're doing a broad introduction to principles of Geography and Environmental Science in the first-year at university.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
100% - so many choices e.g., sports teams, CPD opportunities, learning/development talks, colleague network groups for disability, women, faith etc as well as events such as carol services, regular socials, free site visits and bake sales.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
As mentioned, the sustainability degree apprenticeship programme offers an unrivalled opportunity for engaging and varied full-time work with a fully-funded degree attached. Being at TfL means you will receive exceptional support, something which has helped me to feel a sense of belonging and being valued within the organisation. The culture has been brilliant with a welcoming and inclusive environment, with colleagues always happy to share work and projects with you, seek opportunities for learning more about the transport network, whilst you undertake fulfilling work and benefit from all the advantages of being in London and the reputation of working for a world-class transport authority.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
Think carefully about what TfL stands for (values and purpose), and apply this to your own job application, particularly if shortlisted for the assessment centre. Show your passion for the field and what you could bring to the organisation, which is often very open-minded and innovative in the sustainability space.
