Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am switching between placements every three months, allowing me to get experience in all aspects of finance. This allows me to meet key stakeholders and understand fundamental concepts which will help me get hired at the end of my apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Every day is a school day! I have developed so many skills, both core, transferrable skills and those of which are finance specific.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The placements are set out for you at the very beginning of your apprenticeship - you know where you will be at any time. However, due to this constant moving around, it can make booking time off somewhat difficult as you are constantly needing approval from different managers.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
There are many streams of support at TfL. You will receive an apprenticeship sponsor who will catch up with you every fortnight or so and will always be available should you have any issues. You are given a 'buddy' who is another apprentice that is a year ahead of you. The HR team have an apprentices and career advisor who checks in once a month - sometimes more. Placement managers have a duty and responsibility to ensure all staff feel supported. Finally, the education provider also have a safeguarding policy, which gives you a skills coach which will also check up with you once a quarter.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Our training provider provides us with online lectures, live lectures and a skills coach to help support any learning. HOWEVER, the skills coaches appear to have a lot of students, and so can be very difficult to get a hold of if it is not an emergency.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The training provider allows a more academic view into my role as an accountant. It helps me to understand WHY the systems we have work and why they have been made the way in which they have.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are social activities and opportunities, however, they are not necessarily endorsed by TfL. Graduates and apprentices put together groups which run events which are sometimes purely social, sometimes help benefit and develop skills for apprentices which run fairly often.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The apprenticeship scheme will give a good foundation to work in finance anywhere. It allows you to meet key stakeholders and ask as many questions as possible to help you develop and fulfil your role. TfL being such a wide organisation also means that there is a lot of opportunity for development - there is some security that at the end of the apprenticeship you can do something which you are actually interested in, rather than filling a role. Finally, the benefits to working at TfL are really good - I won't go in to too much detail.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
TfL apprenticeships and grad schemes are extremely competitive. Being yourself will always get you further than academic facades throughout your interview process. Never be afraid to suggest an idea, justify reasoning or question something which might not seem right. So far, TfL appears to reward those who can help the company innovate new ideas, systems and policies to ultimately be more efficient.
