Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a General Management Degree Apprentice at Transport for London (TfL), I rotate across a range of operational and strategic functions, gaining hands-on experience in delivering safe, sustainable and inclusive transport for London.
Throughout my almost 4 years on the scheme, I’ve worked across frontline operations, customer strategy, policy delivery, investment planning and large-scale programme change. This has given me a holistic understanding of how TfL operates — from station-level service delivery through to major infrastructure investment and city-wide policy implementation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship and would say my experience has been extremely positive overall. The breadth of rotations has given me exposure to both frontline operations and high-level strategic work, which has helped me develop a well-rounded understanding of how a complex organisation like TfL operates.
What I’ve particularly valued is the opportunity to take on real responsibility. Being trusted to add meaningful value, rather than simply observe, has made the experience both rewarding and motivating.
The programme has also pushed me outside my comfort zone, developing my confidence, management skills and ability to adapt quickly to new environments. Balancing academic study with full-time roles has been challenging at times, but that challenge has been instrumental in my growth.
Overall, I have greatly enjoyed the programme and feel it has prepared me strongly for a long-term career in the transport industry.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed a wide range of new skills and significantly strengthened existing ones throughout the apprenticeship.
Working across operational, strategic and investment-focused teams has developed my stakeholder management and communication skills, particularly when engaging with senior leaders, cross-functional teams and external advisory groups. I’ve learned how to adapt my communication style depending on the audience.
I’ve also strengthened my project management and organisational skills, balancing multiple workstreams alongside academic study. Delivering live operational changes and contributing to major projects has enhanced my ability to plan effectively, manage risk and meet deadlines.
Analytical thinking has been another key area of development. Through business case writing and strategy roles, I’ve improved my ability to interpret data, identify trends and translate insight into practical, customer-focused recommendations.
Perhaps most importantly, I’ve developed greater confidence, adaptability and resilience, having worked across diverse teams and environments. The programme has pushed me outside my comfort zone, enabling both professional and personal growth.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Overall, I feel the programme is well organised and structured, particularly in the way it provides rotational placements across a wide range of functions. The exposure to both frontline operations and strategic teams has given me a clear development pathway and a strong understanding of how the organisation operates end-to-end. The option to choose your own placements allows you to customise your experience and area of focus.
The rotation structure ensures breadth of experience, while still allowing enough time in each placement to contribute meaningfully and take ownership of work. I’ve found that I have had very supportive managers who help align my responsibilities with both team/business needs and my development goals.
Balancing academic study alongside full-time placements can be demanding, but the structured nature of the programme helps manage this effectively. Where there have been challenges, these have also supported my ability to be adaptable and independent.
Overall, I believe the programme provides a strong framework for development, while still offering flexibility to shape experiences based on individual interests and strengths.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer.
Across each rotation, placement managers and colleagues have taken the time to clearly define expectations, provide regular feedback and create opportunities for me to take on meaningful responsibility. I’ve consistently felt trusted to contribute to live projects while knowing support is available when needed.
There is also strong support in balancing work and academic commitments. Managers have been understanding of study requirements and assessment deadlines, which has helped me manage the dual demands of the apprenticeship effectively.
In addition, the wider apprenticeship network provides peer support and access to development opportunities, which has been valuable in sharing experiences and learning from others on the scheme.
Overall, I feel well supported and encouraged to develop, both in terms of technical capability and confidence as a future leader.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The level of academic support from the training provider has been good with areas of improvement identified.
While individual lecturers are knowledgeable and supportive when approached directly, there have been occasions where communication from the university as a whole has been unclear or delayed. At times, this has created uncertainty and required additional clarification.
However, my employer has played a significant role in bridging this gap. TfL provides strong support, helping us navigate any communication challenges and proactively engaging with the training provider to drive improvements. This collaborative approach has helped ensure that issues are addressed and that apprentices are supported in progressing towards their qualifications.
Overall, while there have been some communication challenges from the training provider, the additional support from my employer has ensured that I remain on track and confident in completing my qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification has supported me well in performing more effectively in my role, particularly due to the variety of modules covered throughout the programme.
The breadth of topics (including leadership, strategy, communication, decision-making and sales and marketing) has provided a well-rounded understanding of core management principles that I can directly apply in the workplace.
For example, modules focused on leadership and managing people have strengthened my approach to stakeholder engagement and collaboration across teams. Strategy and decision-making content has been particularly useful when contributing to business cases and long-term planning work, enabling me to think more critically and commercially. Business communication modules have also improved my confidence in presenting ideas clearly and tailoring messages to different audiences.
The diversity of modules means I am not only developing technical knowledge, but also enhancing transferable skills such as analytical thinking, problem-solving and adaptability, all of which are essential across my rotational placements.
Overall, the qualification complements my practical experience and helps me approach my role with greater structure, confidence and strategic awareness.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a wide range of extra-curricular activities available alongside the apprenticeship scheme.
The Graduate, Apprentice and Intern Committee regularly organises events throughout the year, including networking sessions, development workshops and social events. These provide valuable opportunities to connect with peers across different schemes and areas of the business.
There are also a number of extra-curricular groups that apprentices can get involved in during the programme, which help broaden networks beyond immediate teams.
Social activities and team-building events are encouraged within placements, helping to strengthen working relationships and create a supportive environment.
In addition, TfL has a variety of colleague network groups focused on diversity and inclusion, offering both professional insight and community engagement opportunities. These networks provide an inclusive space to share experiences and contribute to wider organisational initiatives.
Overall, there are strong opportunities to engage beyond day-to-day work, both socially and professionally, which enhances the overall experience of the programme.
