Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Sustainability Degree Apprentice at Transport for London, I support a range of environmental and social sustainability projects that help the organisation work towards its Net Zero and wider ESG goals. My day-to-day work includes collecting and analysing data on areas such as carbon emissions, waste, energy usage and social value, contributing to reports, presentations and internal updates that track performance and inform decision-making. I collaborate with colleagues across different TfL teams to share sustainability guidance, gather information, and help embed best practice within projects and operations. I also carry out research into emerging sustainability trends, legislation and innovations, summarising insights that can support future strategy. Alongside my practical role, I balance my degree studies, applying academic learning directly to real work while developing my technical knowledge and professional skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
In my role as a Sustainability Degree Apprentice, I have developed a strong set of technical and professional skills. I’ve strengthened my data analysis abilities by collecting, organising, and interpreting sustainability metrics such as carbon emissions, waste data, energy usage, and social value outputs. I’ve built confidence in stakeholder engagement, regularly working with teams across the organisation, communicating sustainability requirements, and contributing to meetings and discussions. Through supporting project work, I’ve grown my project management skills, including planning, prioritising tasks, tracking progress, and keeping documentation organised and up to date. I have also advanced my research and critical thinking skills, carrying out analysis of sustainability trends, legislation, and industry best practice to inform team decisions. My role has helped me improve my written communication, particularly in preparing reports, presentations, and briefing notes. On top of this, I’ve developed stronger professional behaviours, such as time management, adaptability, problem‑solving, and balancing academic study with practical responsibilities. Overall, the apprenticeship has allowed me to build both technical sustainability knowledge and the confidence to apply it in a complex, real‑world organisational setting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It is structured as 1 day at university and 4 days within the business, 2 of which are completed in the office. We complete different 6 month placements for the 5 year course spread over different areas of the business.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We have placement managers for each one we complete, and a line manager that is consistent throughout the scheme. Both are always available and there will always be someone to contact should you need any help
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Kingston University is okay. The support from disability teams can often be unreliable during busy periods especially, and tutors can be unresponsive which makes queries difficult when you are only at university once a week.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The University content doesnt really overlap with what we do in the workplace, but the skills taught through assignments can be useful communication wise. GIS is also taught at Kingston and this software is used in parts of TfL which is useful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are some sports teams to join including both men's and women's football and basketball, and the GAIC committee organises both socials and networking events for apprentices, grads and interns. There is also the Sustainability Network where you are able to go on site visits to different parts of the business and find out what they are doing for the environment
