Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role as a Software Developer Apprentice, I support the development and maintenance of software applications. On a day-to-day basis, I write and test code using C# and SQL, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with team members to deliver solutions that meet business needs, following scrum/agile methodologies. I also participate in team meetings, review code, and continuously learn new tools and best practices to improve my skills.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme because I get to work on real projects and actually see the results of what I do. I like solving problems and working with my team, and I feel like I’m learning something new every day. It can be challenging at times, but that’s what makes it exciting and rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve definitely developed both new and existing skills through the programme. I’ve improved my coding skills in C# and SQL, learned how to write and test code more effectively, and gained experience with collaboration tools like Azure DevOps. I’ve also strengthened my problem-solving and communication skills by working on real projects and with my team and presenting my work to stakeholders.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is very well-structured and organised. Tasks and learning objectives are clearly defined, and there’s a good balance between hands-on work, learning, and support from mentors. Regular meetings and progress tracking help me stay on top of my work, and I always know who to go to if I need guidance.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer. My mentors and team are always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and give feedback on my work. This support helps me learn new skills, tackle challenges confidently, and feel motivated to grow in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from Makers while working towards my qualifications. They provide clear guidance, helpful resources, and regular feedback on my progress. Their support makes it easier to understand new concepts, stay on track with my learning, and apply what I’ve learned to real projects.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification through Makers helps me in my role, but not entirely. It gives me useful skills and knowledge, like coding and problem-solving, that I can apply to my work. However, there are times when real workplace challenges go beyond what the course covers, so I still learn a lot on the job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are extra-curricular activities I can get involved in at TfL. For example, I help run networking events for graduates, apprentices, and interns, and I’m part of the schemes’ mental health team for events. These activities let me connect with colleagues across different teams, develop professional skills, and contribute to the wider community.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It’s a supportive and well-structured workplace with opportunities to learn on real projects, develop technical and professional skills, and get involved in extra activities.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
I’d advise anyone applying to research the projects TfL works on that are relevant to your role, such as software systems for transport operations, apps, or digital services. Also, highlight any practical experience, show curiosity, and be ready to demonstrate problem-solving skills, as TfL values both technical ability and initiative.
