Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As part of my apprenticeship at Computacenter I am rotating around the whole marketing department to gain knowledge and understanding of the whole business' marketing functions. Having previously worked within the social media team for 9 months, since August I have been working primarily in marketing projects. Day to day I have meetings with our creative services teams, my manager and our director of marketing to keep on track with the teams activities and discuss anything new. I have spent the majority of the past few months assisting on our company wide brand refresh, creating videos on initiatives such as our volunteering policy and coordinating photoshoots. My designated manager who is in charge of all marketing projects may also bring me into current projects that she needs support with. All of my work, where possible, aligns with my university studies at the time.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the programme. I am being exposed to all areas of marketing and I have full control of my apprenticeship. Compared to other companies offering similar Degree Apprenticeships, I find that Computacenter stands out for 100% putting your University studies first, allowing you to be the sole decision maker on what area of marketing you want to work in and the Apprentice community is only getting bigger. This gives each apprentice not only a team they work with but also a cohort of young professionals in the same position, making the transition into the corporate world smooth and enjoyable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Over the past year and a half of my experience with Computacenter and also my degree I have grown in many skills. My confidence has massively improved, from being more inclined to share my ideas in a meeting to knowing I am actually good at what I do. This has been really nice to see my growth since my first month in the job, starting in the corporate world, after just being in sixth form is scary and I had doubts about myself and my own work. Thanks to continued support from the team, Early Careers teams and the chance to get fully involved in our Outreach programme has helped boost my confidence in multiple areas. I also have massively grown confidence in public speaking. I always throw myself out of my comfort zone, but it has only helped, and each time I speak to an audience I know I can speak to a bigger crowd next time. Other than soft skills I also have grown tremendously in writing, gramma, content management and creation, excel, video editing and project management.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
For me, I have had no problem, but for some people I am sure they would like a little more structure. When I started the apprenticeship I knew I was going to work in social media, but I didn't know how long or where I would be rotated next. Now I am working in marketing projects it is the same. For me, I am super happy with the work I am doing currently, and if I said I would really like to work in ABM for example next then that can be arranged. For some people they may prefer a clear structure path to the end of their programme.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have multiple streams of support from my employer. First of all my designated manager is there for all day to day questions and challenges I may be facing. She ensures my university work is going okay, I am not overwhelmed and that if I am struggling with any specific task that I get the support I need to learn and grow. Additionally, the Early Careers team are genuinely there for you the second you need support. With check in meetings occurring ever 8 weeks for 1-1 support, the team is also just a message away if you need anything between these sessions. Finally, the way the Apprenticeship programme has been set up at Computacenter gives you a wave of support from the fellow apprentices. The Early Careers team organise apprentice community calls, community lunches and events that bring us all together so we can grow on these relationships. I find that the support I get from my fellow apprentice friends can be incomparable as they are experiencing the same thing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I would leave 5 stars but my support last year was quite disappointing. From Sept 2024 till Aug 2024 I had regular contact with my University mentor who was fantastic and helped me with more than just the uni work. She was there to help ensure my work I am doing is reflective of the modules I study, and she was also fantastic at helping me grow my hard and soft skills. in September I had to take some medical leave, due to a transition in the University where mentors were slowly changing over, I had zero contact for over 2 months from my mentor. This was worrying as I was not able to complete my university work at the time and I needed clarification from Aston University that they were aware of my situation. It was quite anxiety provoking, but eventually I contacted the head of my programme and she was extremely helpful. Therefore, for much of my programme so far my uni mentor was great, but I did have a bad experience for a few months of last year.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I think that a lot of my learning is from my day to day job and learning from the professionals around me. Of course there are elements of my Degree that are beneficial and help give me a foundation of understanding for some of the most crucial marketing frameworks and ways of working.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are definitely 'extra-curricular activities' of some sort. I don't get involved in many as nothing truly appeals to me, but I do go on outdoor walks with my team when we are in the office and I do take part regularly in our Outreach programme. This gives me the opportunity to attend local schools or career fairs and share my experiences and journey with prospective apprentices or students who may want to learn more about the apprentice pathway. This has been a great part of developing my soft skills.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Computacenter to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Computacenter is a fantastic company to work for. It has a flat structure which gives us a high degree of autonomy. I have had conversations with our board directors, and they don't make you feel like you are any less than them. Computacenter is the type of place you can ask anyone for help or guidance and they will block out an hour of your day to support you and help you understand. Employees retention rates are just unheard of, with the average working time being over 10 years. The benefits are great, and flexible working is actually flexible.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Computacenter?
Research the company and know truly why you want to work for Computacenter, they always want to know why them. If you know you have the skills and qualifications then just be yourself, Computacenter is full of lots of personalities and the team's will want to hire someone that fits in with their team.
