Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I get to design complex solutions for a variety of engineering problems on site. This can span across a variety of specialist areas in control systems, electrical power and instrumentation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I think my programme has given me a lot of knowledge in electrical engineering and responsibility that is helping me become a great design engineer. Being able to study for my BEng simultaneously without debt is a great incentive.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I am learning new soft skills to help me work well within teams and communicate across the organisation and beyond. Everyday I am learning more electrical technical knowledge at both work and college to help me continue to progress my competence throughout the apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
This programme is very well structured through the 5 year scheme and is even accredited by the IET.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support I receive from my Sellafield is excellent. I have pathway leads, line managers, the education and skills teams and an extensive early careers support network.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
This training provider carries out lectures of my engineering degree modules once a week and also puts on extra support sessions once a week to ensure everybody is well prepared to succeed in assignments and final module exams.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Having a BEng is very useful to understand the fundamental engineering knowledge required to do my job as a design engineer. These qualifications are also helpful for when I apply for professional registration in the future.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Through the degree apprentice council, there are many socials and fundraisers organised, CPD events, and even national/international trips to further enrich my knowledge of the nuclear industry.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Sellafield Ltd to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There is so much opportunity at the company to continue to learn and improve yourself. I receive a lot of support as an apprentice and believe that this company is the key to help me achieve everything I want to as an engineer throughout my career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
Make sure you roughly know what you want to do and why you think it interests you. If you are genuinely interested in the nuclear sector and the role you could play in it. This will put you in a strong position to potentially join the company as an apprentice in the future.
