Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

We are maintenance and operation technicians so we work offshore on Teeside windfarm and repair faults in the turbines and maintain them with routine services to keep the power flowing.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My colleagues are lovely and help with any questions and queries. College is interesting and the tutors are very informative. We get to visit different company sites to get a real feel for what goes on behind the scenes when our power hits the substations or when we send a gear box off to be repaired which only widens our knowledge and interest more.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned entirely new skill sets for electrical, mechanical and hydraulic and pneumatic machines and came to a good understanding of how a turbine generates power.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The site visits and day trips often come out of the blue but all in all the structure is well established to allow us to use what we have learned in college onsite between term times.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

EDF have amazing policies designed to help those with difficulties of which I have used from time to time when struggling with mental health problems.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

All the tutors are determined for you to succeed and will sit down and speak you through tasks and assignments step by step if you begin to struggle.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It is teaching me everything I would need o know and more so I have extra transferrable skills to enable me to think outside the box and problem solve on a more advanced level.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Every so often we have face to face events where we can discuss company updates and we aim for the 10MW by 2035 and this allows us to speak with people within the company from all backgrounds from project development to other wind techs.

They have enabled me to reach heights I never thought were possible and with so many different sectors and opportunities to advance in your career, this company has a job for everyone and a career ladder which will set you up for life.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EDF Energy?
Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. As someone who had never been on a boat before and hates heights, working offshore at height was the best decision ever as it built my confidence and has been by far the best job I have ever worked due to the challenges and variation of day to day work. It isn't just a 9-5, its a life style and a fun one at that.
