Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I balance academic learning with real-world experience in one of the UK’s most complex and highly regulated industries. I study remotely one day each week, developing a strong foundation in project management principles, methodologies, and business practices. The rest of my time is spent on-site at Heysham 2, where I gain hands-on experience by supporting and managing my own projects. Working alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and operational teams, I contribute to maintaining safe, reliable generation while developing practical skills in planning, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and project delivery. This combination of academic study and direct industry exposure enables me to build a strong, future-ready career in project management within the energy sector
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme. The combination of academic study and hands-on experience keeps the work engaging and meaningful, and I feel like I’m constantly learning and developing. Being able to apply what I study directly to real projects at Heysham 2 makes the apprenticeship both rewarding and motivating

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I’ve learnt a range of new skills and strengthened several existing ones. Through my academic study, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of project management principles, planning techniques, and risk management. On-site at Heysham 2, I’ve developed practical skills such as stakeholder communication, problem‑solving, and organising tasks effectively. Managing my own projects has also helped me build confidence, improve time management, and apply theoretical knowledge in a real industrial environment

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
At the start, some aspects were a bit unclear, particularly around expectations and how the academic and workplace elements would link together. However, as I’ve progressed, the structure has become more understandable and easier to navigate. The combination of weekly study and on‑site project work now feels more balanced, and I have a clearer sense of what is required and how to plan my time effectively.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel well supported by my employer. My team and managers are approachable, and they regularly check in to make sure I’m progressing well. Overall, the level of support has made a big difference to my confidence and development throughout the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider. They are responsive when I need clarification and provide useful resources and guidance to help me stay on track with my assignments. The regular check‑ins and feedback also make it easier to understand my progress and what I need to improve.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification supports me well in performing better in my role. The academic content gives me a solid understanding of project management principles, which I can then apply directly to the work I do on-site.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Social events, volunteering activities, and networking groups that help you meet people from other teams and sites. There are also professional development sessions and early‑career communities that apprentices can join to build connections and learn from others.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EDF Energy to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend EDF Energy because it’s a supportive and engaging place to work, especially as an apprentice. The company offers strong development opportunities, a welcoming culture, and the chance to gain hands‑on experience in a highly skilled and regulated environment. I’ve felt well supported by my team and managers, and the combination of real project work and ongoing learning has helped me grow both professionally and personally.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EDF Energy?
I’d recommend taking the time to really understand EDF’s values and the role you’re applying for, as this helps you show genuine interest and align your strengths with what the company is looking for. Be ready to give examples of times you’ve worked in a team, solved problems, or shown initiative—these are important skills across the business. It also helps to research the energy sector so you can show awareness of the challenges and opportunities in low‑carbon generation. Finally, be yourself and stay open‑minded; EDF values people who are eager to learn and willing to get involved.
