Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Energy System Operator?
My time with NESO so far has been really positive. The Early Careers team made the induction smooth and helped me feel settled from day one, which made a big difference starting out.
I’m currently in my first placement, and I really like that the programme is set up so you can move around different parts of the business later on. Even now, I’ve had the chance to see how things fit together and get a sense of how the whole organisation works, which is pretty interesting.
It’s been a great way to learn, meet people, and start building confidence in what I do. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the business as I go through the placements.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I have really enjoyed the data analysis part of my role and being able to look into the data and pull out meaningful context that can lead to real changes. It feels great to know that the work I am doing can make a difference and have an impact.
I have also really enjoyed working closely with my team. From my first day they have supported me to understand the industry, encouraged me to ask questions and given me opportunities to learn and grow. As I have taken on more responsibilities I have been able to contribute to the team in a way that feels impactful and that has made me feel like I belong. Having that trust and support has been a big part of why I have enjoyed this experience so much.
Overall it has been a mix of challenging work and a team that makes you feel included and valued. I am looking forward to building on what I have learnt and continuing to take on more responsibility as I go forward.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I feel like the work I do is important and adds real value, and that gives me a boost in passion and drive for what I do. It can be easy to lose motivation when a task feels irrelevant or non-essential, but I have been lucky that the work I have been given has challenged me in ways that help me grow and learn. I have also had the chance to share my findings with my team, which makes the experience even more rewarding.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
There are loads of perks and benefits at NESO, from flexible working hours to health and wellbeing support, financial savings plans, and even things like holiday trading and gym discounts. Honestly, I haven’t had time to look through them all yet because there’s so much on offer!
What really stands out to me is that NESO clearly values our wellbeing as people, not just employees. The benefits package shows that in a big way, whether it’s through flexible working options, health assessments, or initiatives that make life easier outside of work. It feels like the company genuinely cares about creating a balance that works for everyone, and that makes a huge difference.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I feel like this role is doing a great job of preparing me for my future career. NESO’s work is so impactful, and being part of that gives me a real sense of purpose and confidence in what I’m learning. The structure of the programme, with the chance to move through different areas of the business, means I’ll gain a much better understanding of how the company works as a whole.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I would rate it highly because I’ve been developing a lot of transferable skills through both formal training and my day-to-day work. Coding and data analysis have been a big part of my role, and those skills are something I know will be useful throughout my career. At the same time, working on other tasks has helped me learn how to approach problems, think about solutions, and see them through to completion, which is just as important.
NESO also offers plenty of training opportunities beyond my immediate role. There are sessions and resources that give insight into different areas of the company, which really helps build a broader understanding of how everything fits together.

5/5
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to National Energy System Operator?
Be yourself. At NESO we are encouraged to feel like we belong. Talk about your experiences, your formal and informal opportunities to learn and grow, and how that would make you suitable. You don’t need to have all the knowledge about energy systems. You need to have the ability, drive, and curiosity to learn, grow, and develop new skills as you move through the graduate scheme.
