Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an apprentice science technician, I support the preparation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and materials for practical science lessons. My day-today responsibilities include:
Setting up experiments and ensuring all apparatus and chemicals are ready for use.
Maintaining and calibrating scientific equipment to ensure safety and accuracy.
Assisting with stock control and safe storage of chemicals and resources.
Following health and safety protocols, including COSHH regulations.
Collaborating with teaching staff to provide technical support during lessons.
Ensuring that all of the gas taps are off at the end of the school day.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The programme is going well and has become more engaging now that we’re focusing on science-related activities. Initially, there were a few seminars on topics like cyber security and GDPR—subjects I had already covered when starting my role with this employer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve gained knowledge of COSHH regulations and data management systems for storing experimental results. Additionally, I’ve improved my practical techniques and learned how to fabricate custom equipment for lessons when commercially available products are unsuitable or not cost-effective.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well-structured, with tutorials scheduled every four weeks. However, when issues arise or a seminar is cancelled, it can be challenging to get confirmation that your correspondence has been received.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I’ve received all the support I could ask for. My line manager and Head of Faculty have been fantastic and extremely supportive, and the teaching staff have also been very helpful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I've not asked for any, so its not a relevant question for me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It provides a solid foundation of knowledge to support me in my role, such as understanding how to store chemicals safely.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are extra-curricular activities that I could get involved with.
