Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Management Trainee Intern, my role focuses on learning how different areas of the business operate while supporting day-to-day branch activities. The position is designed to build leadership, customer service, and operational management skills through hands-on experience.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
1. Customer Service & Frontline Interaction
I work directly with customers—assisting with inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring they have a smooth and positive experience. This includes greeting customers, understanding their needs, and offering solutions that best fit them.
2. Operations & Workflow Management
Each day involves supporting branch operations such as coordinating reservations, managing schedules, tracking inventory, and ensuring vehicles/equipment are prepared and organized.
3. Sales & Relationship Building
I actively communicate with customers to identify opportunities for value-added services. This helps strengthen customer relationships while contributing to branch performance goals.
4. Learning from Management
I shadow managers to understand how decisions are made, how performance metrics are tracked, and how leadership contributes to daily operations. This includes participating in team meetings and performance discussions.
5. Problem Solving in Real Time
The environment is fast-paced, so I frequently troubleshoot unexpected challenges—whether related to customer needs, logistics, or workflow adjustments.
6. Collaboration with the Team
I work closely with team members to coordinate tasks, communicate updates, and ensure smooth daily operations. This helps build teamwork and adaptability.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a significant level of responsibility throughout my placement, which made the experience both meaningful and challenging in a positive way. From the very beginning, I was trusted to take ownership of real tasks that had an impact on daily operations. This included handling customer interactions independently, managing key parts of the workflow, and assisting with decision-making during busy periods.
I was also encouraged to take initiative, solve problems on the spot, and contribute ideas to improve processes. Although support and guidance were always available when needed, I appreciated that the team treated me like a valued member rather than just an intern. The level of responsibility helped me build confidence, develop leadership skills, and understand what it’s like to operate in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
the internship gave me the chance to both learn new skills and strengthen the abilities I already had. One of the biggest areas of growth was my communication and customer service skills, as I regularly interacted with a wide range of customers and learned how to tailor my approach to different situations.
I also developed stronger problem-solving skills, especially in fast-paced moments where quick decisions were needed. This experience taught me how to stay calm under pressure, think logically, and find solutions that balance customer needs with operational priorities.
On top of that, I built new skills in operations management, teamwork, and time management. Handling multiple tasks at once, organising workflows, and coordinating with colleagues helped me become more efficient and confident. Overall, the role pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way and helped me grow both personally and professionally.
