Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
Balfour Beatty has been a great source of development and experiences, its not the typical Hierarchical organisation, no matter your job role or level, each person is entitled to their opinion and is advised to share it. There have been many times where I have talked to Heads of departments and even had the chance to speak to our CPO and learn from their experiences and insight. I have been consistently pushed out my comfort zone, whether that be leading meetings, making phone calls or even traveling, each a new source of growth in my incredible journey so far. Furthermore Balfours do not hold back, when it comes to development and training opportunities, they promote and encourage every person to take the chance to enhance their skills via charterships, training courses and development programs. Overall I am glad I have joined the Balfours family and I look forward to my future here.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The main role of procurement is to try and create value for the organisation, through cost savings, reduction in environmental impact and supplier relationships. My role consist of creating RFQ's and tenders based of the project teams needs, I work in the substation side and we look to engage early with the supply chain as the equipment is long lead time. Once the tenders are received I help facilitate the evaluation with the project team to make sure that they are fairly scored, from which we proceed with the recommended. I also reach out to potential suppliers, to add them to our systems, process purchase orders and send them to the relevant suppliers for invoicing. My favourite elements are communicating with the supply chain and my project team, this allows me to stay ahead of the situation and highlight any concerns before they become to big.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
I find that the most meaningful part is when someone can rely on you to get the job done and my team always make note of the people who go above and beyond, helping their fellow team members. there is even an opportunity to nominate each other for an additional £50 award for this.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
I find we get great benefits, such as a pension, private healthcare, stock options, cycle to work scheme, the opportunity to buy holiday and the opportunity to get vouchers and discount for certain companies.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
This role is not only developing me like finely tuned instrument but also bridging the gap between success and opportunities, with a keen focus on internal development.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
I have definitely seen myself making massive strides in development after my first few months, once the basics have been understood the training wheels come off and we get a chance to fully undergo development in the type of workload provided and chances to lead, everyone is patient and willing to assist to ensure that we grow.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
I have constant 1 to 1's to see how my workload is feeling and I am always encourage to develop my skills and take the opportunities of the early careers.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
I get 2 days working from home a week and my working hours are flexible as long as I do my 7.5 hours a day, we do not get scrutinised, this allows me to work my work round my life instead of my life round my work
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
4/5
the company is inclusive in nature and have many programs and groups that help promote this internally. we have 5 golden rules that encompass all our work stemming from the 100 years of history that Balfours has, we prioritise safety above all and embed this in our right first time mantra that we try and make sure that everything is done thoroughly and correctly so it can be achieved first time without incident. additional we get two volunteering days a year where we get the chance to hep the community or a cause close to our hearts.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
one of the best I have seen in any organisation, we consistently take into consideration peoples religion and highlight holidays and the meanings, we provide people with prayer rooms in each office and a keen focus on not eating in the office when their are on Ramadan and many more.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
As I said previously they always provide using your 2 days of volunteering each year to give back to the local communities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe that Balfour Beatty will be a great chance to develop and become and integral part of a team, where you can expand and share your knowledge without judgment and bias.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
I believe it has went above and beyond what I original thought but this was also my first time experiencing this job role.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
My biggest mistake at the start was waiting on work to be given to me, make sure to actively ask and push for work, take all the opportunities that appear and embrace the challenge.
