Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role was in private capital audit so I worked with a variety of clients ranging from private limited companies to large listed firms across many sectors/industries. Day-to-day this involved collecting evidence for audits, talking to clients regularly and documenting information for audit files.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
During my placement, I was encouraged to take responsibility for all my work and not to rely on anyone else to complete it for me. This didn’t mean I wasn’t supported as there was plenty of support available from the audit team but there was an expectation that you would complete your work to a high standard and if you required any assistance, all you needed to do was ask.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
You develop many skills during a placement at Grant Thornton but there are two skills that are particularly strong after completing my placement. The first skill is communication and the confidence to communicate with clients, managers, partners and other colleagues in a professional manner. Audits require lots of teamwork so you regularly communicate with the audit engagement team to ensure work is being completed efficiently and if there are any issues arising, they can be dealt with swiftly to ensure there are minimal delays to work completion. The second skill I wanted to mention is excel proficiency. Even as a financial mathematics student who uses excel regularly at uni, my excel skills were taken to another level during my placement as you are using excel everyday which means that excel formulas, tips and tricks become second nature!

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
During my placement, there was lots of support available and you are assigned a people manager, career coach and buddy. So it doesn’t matter whether the issue is personal, job-related, development-related or just an day-to-day query, one of these individuals will be able to help or can direct you towards someone who will be able to assist you with whatever the issue is.
