Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an intern in Global Tax and People Advisory Services, my role was to gain broad exposure across diverse teams, including immigration, mobility, payroll, and rewards, and to actively contribute to projects that integrated technical tax expertise with people‑focused advisory work. I took responsibility for proactively reaching out to teams, offering support where needed, and engaging in both analytical tasks and client‑facing activities, which allowed me to develop practical skills while gaining insight into how tax and people advisory services operate in practice.
On a typical day, I would begin by reaching out to different teams to offer support, which often led to a mix of tasks and learning opportunities. Much of my time was spent checking data for tax appendices, and excel tables which helped me sharpen my analytical skills and attention to detail. I also carried out research into international tax legislation and mobility policies, condensing complex information into clear summaries for team use.
Throughout the day, I often shadowed client meetings and internal discussions, gaining first‑hand exposure to how technical advice was communicated and how projects were managed collaboratively. My day was largely taken up with collaborative tasks and administrative work, which kept me engaged and busy. In addition, there were frequent scheduled knowledge sessions with specialists across Global Tax, giving interns valuable exposure to different areas of the practice. During quieter periods, I made use of online training and educational courses, which provided specialist knowledge and helped reinforce my learning.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As EY is a company built on collaboration, development, and progression, I was entrusted with a significant level of responsibility. There was always someone available to review my work and offer guidance, which made the experience supportive rather than intimidating. The culture is designed to help you grow and flourish, encouraging interns to take initiative while knowing they have the backing of experienced colleagues.
One of my key responsibilities was calling HMRC on behalf of clients, which required careful handling of sensitive information, strict confidentiality, and a mature, professional approach. This task not only demanded accuracy and trustworthiness but also strengthened my communication skills, as I had to convey information clearly and effectively while representing the firm. It gave me valuable experience in managing client relationships and reinforced the importance of discretion and professionalism in tax advisory work.
Additionally, I was encouraged to join client meetings and take minutes, a responsibility that required professionalism, discretion, and trust. This experience not only gave me exposure to client interactions but also strengthened my ability to listen carefully, capture key points accurately, and contribute to the team’s efficiency.
To conclude, EY encouraged us to take on as many responsibilities as possible, and I was given the opportunity to do so. This was a really motivating experience, as it demonstrated the trust placed in us and highlighted the supportive culture of the firm. It reinforced the idea that interns are valued contributors, not just observers, and that our development is actively invested in.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout my internship. From the outset, I was assigned a buddy, who acted as a first point of contact for day‑to‑day questions and helped me settle into the role. I also had a counsellor, who provided more formal guidance and encouraged me to reflect on my progress and development. Working alongside fellow interns was another source of support, as we could share experiences, collaborate, and learn from one another. In addition, there was a structured feedback process, where each team I supported provided written feedback at the end of the placement. This combination of informal and formal support ensured that I always had someone to turn to, and it made the experience both encouraging and developmental.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture at EY was very positive, supportive, and collaborative. From the start, interns were paired with buddies, which made it easy to settle in and ensured there was always someone to turn to for guidance. The atmosphere was welcoming and inclusive, with plenty of opportunities to connect beyond day‑to‑day work. For example, there were arranged intern drinks that helped us build friendships with fellow interns, and even a breakfast with one of our partners, which gave us the chance to engage with senior leadership in a relaxed setting. Overall, the culture encouraged both professional development and personal connections, making the internship feel motivating and enjoyable.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I genuinely enjoyed my internship at EY and found it to be both rewarding and motivating. From the very beginning, I was trusted with meaningful responsibilities. The variety of tasks meant that no two days were the same, and I was constantly learning, whether it was through shadowing client meetings, joining knowledge sessions with specialists, or engaging in online training during quieter periods.
What made the experience particularly enjoyable was the supportive culture. Having a buddy, a counsellor, and fellow interns to share the journey with created a collaborative atmosphere where I always felt encouraged to ask questions and take initiative. The structured feedback process also helped me reflect on my strengths and identify areas for growth, which made the internship feel like a genuine investment in my development.
Overall, I found the placement both challenging and inspiring, and it confirmed for me that EY is the right place to begin my career. I was delighted to be offered a place on the graduate scheme, which I have accepted and will be starting in September 2026. That outcome reflects how much I enjoyed the internship and how motivated I am to return to the firm in a permanent role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
My main advice would be not to feel intimidated by the application process or by what you study at university. Many of my fellow interns came from economics or finance backgrounds, whereas I studied history, but I quickly realised that EY prioritises you as a person over your specific degree course. The firm values diverse perspectives and skills, so don’t hold back because you think you don’t have the “right” background. Just give it a try, show your enthusiasm, and be ready to learn, because EY is looking for people who can grow and flourish in a collaborative environment.
