Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
My experience with the grad scheme has been great, I've fully taken advantage of all the great opportunities the scheme has to offer for young professionals. I've grown more as a person and have have developed my engineering skills. I've also networked a lot and got to know other young professionals in the business. Activities I've taken part in:
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award
Lead the early careers networks for the strategic design partnership
Took part in all the lake district early careers trips
Part of the multi cultural affinity network and took part in 2 podcasts and encouraged refugees to join the industry by taking in their CV's and advising on improvements
Became a finalist for the ICE South West Graduate of the Year Award
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
As a graduate in the temporary works team, my main roles were to write briefs for design packages and communicate to the designer the intended outcomes. I've also designed things myself on AutoCAD such as simple scaffolding structures to store rebar on. I've also worked closely with the digital team on preparing 4D animations of the construction sequences that are to take place all whilst considering health and safety as well as efficient solutions to potential problems picked up by the animation. Working with the digital team was my favourite aspect of my role, as it was good experience to lead and to gain more knowledge on how to fix things quickly and safely from the other temporary works engineers in the team.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
Even though I had little work experience coming from university, my voice in the team was never hidden. I was always given opportunities to grow whether engineering wise or personality wise with the aforementioned activities listed above. After all my tasks were completed and achievements made through my grad scheme, I was praised afterwards and felt included and proud to be part of this team.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Balfour Beatty has an excellent benefits scheme, and it's great to be given the opportunity for medical and dental insurance, discounts all around, and the ability to buy extra holidays which for me was vital as I'm international and my family lives overseas so it's great to be able to spend more time with them and discuss all the great things that I've been up to with the company.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The role is fantastic and I would recommend to all future people applying to Balfour Beatty. Great mentors and opportunities all around that broadened my engineering skills and take on more responsibilities. Extra curricular wise, the company is full of opportunities to get on hands on experience in leading groups and growing as a person that will come in handy to prepare me for future communications in my career.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
When asked if I can get more site experience, I was given the opportunity. I'm now a Site Engineer on shift, constantly learning new skills everyday that enhance my engineering skills and I'm able to apply the things that I've learned from the past 2 years into this new role when communicating with the workforce on site.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
Support can be found anywhere in the company, when asked it will be received. Whether it's knowledge gained from my line managers and grad mentors that push me to be my best self, or support from HR when having problems with course selections and payslip issues. There's also great support from my Line Managers to achieve my chartership status as they're constantly guiding me through the attributes and how I can tick things off.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
I don't find any problems trying to organise my life with my work. It all seems to be going pleasantly well even with this new shift role I'm on. I still find time to do the things I want to do before or after work without it affecting my focus during work time.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The company strives to make everyone welcome no matter what background the individual comes from. I've never felt out of place or received any less benefits than anyone else when asked.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
The company is great at including everyone of all ethnicities and backgrounds, and promotes that our differences are what make us stronger. I've also organised an ED & I panel for the early careers to continue promoting this important topic to all new recruits as well.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
CSR is great at Balfour Beatty and has given me many opportunities to stand out, such as joining the multi cultural affinity network and creating a podcast that discusses 2 major events in the islamic calendar: Ramadan and Eid Al Adha. The podcasts were a great success and were watched by over 3000 people within the company. I've also taken part in World Refugee Day to meet with refugees and advise on improving CVs for them to join the company (being fluent in Arabic helped them feel included and heard).

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There are so many opportunities to grow, technical skills wise and personality wise. The environment is great to work at and everyone will always feel included. Balfour Beatty is also a world renown name in a competitive industry taking part in many exciting projects.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
It was everything the job description entailed and a few more things about the job that were discussed during my interview so all in all everything was mentioned to me beforehand.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Read about the company and all the opportunities it offers. Look at the company values and understand them well. Make sure to take time with your application, make it more personal with a cover letter attached to your CV, and make sure you look at the format of assessment centres before doing one. Practice a lot of competency questions which can be found online and prepare answers for them.
