Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Mace?
As a graduate at Mace, due to my previous year industrial placement, I have had the opportunity right from the start to work within a dynamic fee earning client role, on the largest current UK project, Sizewell C. This has majorly valued my innovation and professional growth not only towards my RICS but overall as an aspiring Commercial Manager. I have gained further hands-on experience in project delivery, stakeholder management, and problem-solving, whilst working alongside senior professionals to support my development. The culture at Mace encourages that everyone of all professional levels take ownership of tasks, contribute ideas, and continuously learn, which has been fantastic in building confidence and competence.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The main responsibilities I have may differ from other graduates at Mace due to being in a fee earning client role, the expectation from me right from when i first joined Mace was to perform at a level of an Assistant Commercial Manager which is the title given to graduates post the 2 year graduate scheme. Some responsibilities include;
- Project Planning and Commercial Execution
- Contract Administration (Differs each client to client)
- Financial risk Management
- Client/Stakeholder engagement
- Collaborate with the wider team (PMs, Planners etc)
- Reporting and documentation)
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
Very much so.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
The perks and benefits at Mace are endless and have been really important to me across the year, I have enrolled into the Mace Pension scheme, Bupa Private health care but there are many more you can choose. Annual Leave is very fair and they give you a further 3 days known as "Mace days" for days where you need some time of for any personal matters etc.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
Its everything you look for in a graduate role preparing you to become an industry professional, the achievement of a professional body support is faultless and they really push you to dive into everything and anything
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
Graduate training days are regularly hosted to improve skills across all areas of the industry these vary from online and in person sessions with internal/external professionals delivering the sessions. In the day to day role you constantly learn new skills as the industry is so dynamic you could undertake so many different tasks

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
You are always placed with a buddy who is typically the year or two above you in a similar role, this helps so much with confidence and a person to turn to for help. The HR team are wonderful and very friendly who always try to organise catch ups or events for the team to get together. Line managers differ across Mace as there is so many graduates that join every year sometimes you may be placed with a manager in a more senior role which is difficult at times to communicate as they have limited space and time for meetings, but they will always make some time even if its just 5-10 mins for a catch up.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
Yes very good, I have flexibility in terms of Working from home and being in the office, as long as your work is complete and to a standard they expect there is never a issue.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Mace is one of if not the most diverse and inclusive companies in the construction industry which it majorly prides itself on. The culture is so welcoming and even though I have been here for a year and technically a newbie (grad scheme, 14 month placement) I always make it my place to say hello and smile to everyone as well.
How would you rate Mace initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Mace has endless communities/ forums/ sessions for the inclusion of everyone at Mace know matter your beliefs or interests.
How would you rate Mace CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
I am probably more so unaware than others of the environmental, ethical initiatives Mace provides but volunteering and community events are always offered to employees, they expect you to complete minimum of one volunteering day a year and there is a real wide range of days to pick from.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have been at Mace technically for 2 and a half years now and I wouldn't have returned to Mace after my placement if it wasn't a great company. Also a lot of the time when you speak to people whether that was University lecturers, friends, family when you mention you work for Mace, they tend to go "Wow Mace I've heard great things"
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
I knew what i was returning to due to my prior placement experience, fell straight back into a similar role however this time i was fee earning from the client.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Mace?
Be yourself, do your homework before of the company; ts values and what we stand for, current projects we work on, be prepared for real life situations.
