Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
Balfour Beatty have been absolutely extraordinary. They are extremely flexible and accommodating for students and fresh graduates alike. The Balfour Beatty graduate scheme for me has been an incredible journey. From day one, the company demonstrates a genuine commitment to developing young talent. They don’t just give you a job, they provide a structured pathway for growth, with clear plans and personalised support to help you thrive. The learning opportunities are endless, whether through hands on experience, mentoring, or formal training programmes. You’re equipped with all the tools, resources, and guidance you need to succeed, and there’s a strong emphasis on helping you discover where you fit within the infrastructure industry. What makes Balfour Beatty stand out is the culture of encouragement and trust. The company empowers you to take ownership, explore your interests, and build a career that feels meaningful. It’s a place where you’re not just part of projects, but part of shaping the future. It's a given that infrastructure/construction has historically been male-dominated, and stepping into that space as a woman can feel intimidating, but Balfour Beatty encourages it, as well as focuses on it by running female workshops, seminars and support groups. They are a huge leader in changing the workplace gender norms.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Within my role, I have had the opportunity to rotate within the Work Winning department, through multiple job specifics, like Business Development, Bid Management, Proposal Management and Pre-Construction. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to move externally within Balfour Beatty to another business and carry out a placement within the Communications department. Working across multiple specific business units is an incredible advantage early in your career because it gives you a broader perspective on how the infrastructure sector operates as a whole. This diversity not only accelerates your learning but also makes you more adaptable and valuable in a fast developing industry. Both job roles require collaboration, attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging narratives. These are skills that are essential for building strong client relationships and promoting the organisation.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
Throughout my graduate journey, I’ve had the privilege of working with two incredible teams, and both have been absolutely brilliant. From day one, they’ve been supportive, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping me succeed. Whether it’s sharing knowledge, guiding me through complex tasks, or encouraging me to take on new challenges, their backing has made a huge difference to my development. I’ve learned so much thanks to their patience and expertise, and their collaborative spirit has created an environment where I’ve felt confident to grow and contribute. This has been imperative in my journey as this is where I will require the most moulding.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Well one of the things I really appreciate about Balfour Beatty is the fantastic range of employee benefits. They genuinely make a difference to everyday life, from health and wellbeing perks to discounts that help you enjoy more for less. Personally, I love the cinema discount, it’s such a great way to unwind after a busy week and make the most of my free time without breaking the bank. It’s just one example of how the company goes above and beyond to support its people, not only at work but in life outside of work too.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
During University I felt like I wasn't clear on my route, after working at Balfour Beatty I feel the role is preparing me massively for my future career. It’s not just about gaining experience, it’s about building a strong foundation and understanding what I truly enjoy and love within the industry. Every rotation has opened new doors, giving me exposure to different areas and helping me develop a wide range of skills, from technical knowledge to communication and collaboration. This variety has been invaluable in shaping my confidence and allowing me to discover where my strengths lie. The structured support, clear development plans, and opportunities to take ownership of tasks have all contributed to paving the way for a career that feels right for me. I’m learning every day, and that sense of growth and direction is exactly what I hoped for when starting this journey.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I would rate it very highly because I’ve been able to develop both new and existing skills through a combination of formal training and my day-to-day responsibilities. The structured training sessions have given me solid foundations in technical knowledge and industry best practices, while my role has allowed me to apply those learnings in real scenarios, which really reinforces understanding. On top of that, working on live projects and collaborating with different teams has helped me strengthen essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and adaptability. This blend of theory and practical experience has been invaluable for my growth and confidence.
