Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
As a Graduate Control Systems Engineer in the Substation Control Systems team, I’ve been involved in supporting the design and commissioning of control and protection systems across several projects. Over the past 10 months, I’ve moved from mainly office-based design work to spending time on site, which has been a really valuable experience. Seeing how our designs come together in the field has helped me understand the practical side of what we do and how different teams work together to deliver a project.
Overall, my experience at Balfour Beatty has been really positive. I’ve learned a huge amount in a short space of time and have been supported by a knowledgeable and approachable team. Getting exposure to both the technical and on-site aspects of the job has given me a much better picture of how everything fits together. It’s been challenging at times, but in a good way - I feel like I’m growing in confidence and building a strong foundation for the next steps in my career.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My main responsibilities include supporting the design, configuration, and testing of substation control systems. This involves producing and reviewing engineering documentation, assisting with system configuration, and helping to ensure that designs meet project and client requirements. Recently, I’ve also been involved in on-site activities, such as witnessing installations, supporting commissioning, and seeing how our systems are integrated and brought into service.
What I enjoy most is the variety - every project brings new challenges and opportunities to learn. I particularly like the mix of technical problem-solving and practical application, as well as working with different teams across design, construction, and commissioning. Being on site has been a highlight for me because it’s given me a clearer understanding of how the design work we do in the office translates into real-world outcomes. It’s rewarding to see something I’ve worked on actually come to life.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I feel that my role gives me good opportunities to contribute and be part of the team. Even as a graduate, I’ve been trusted to take ownership of certain tasks and support real project deliverables, which has helped me feel like I’m making a difference. My team are always open to questions and happy to explain things, but they also encourage me to think for myself and have input into decisions.
The feedback I’ve received from colleagues has been positive and constructive, which makes me feel valued and motivates me to keep improving. Overall, I feel included, supported, and recognised for the effort I put in.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
I feel that my compensation package as a graduate is fair and in line with industry standards for my level of experience. The salary reflects the stage I’m at in my career, and there’s a clear structure for progression as I develop more skills and take on additional responsibilities.
The benefits package is also good - things like the pension, flexible working, and access to professional development opportunities add real value. I also appreciate the support for chartership and ongoing training, which shows that Balfour Beatty invests in its people’s long-term growth, not just their immediate output.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I am developing important soft skills, like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are essential for progressing towards more senior or project management roles in the future. The exposure I’ve had to real projects and experienced engineers has given me a clear picture of what’s expected at the next level, and I feel confident that I’m building the right skills and experience to get there.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I’d say I’m developing my skills to a strong extent through both formal training and day-to-day work. The structured graduate training and internal courses have helped me build a solid understanding of company processes, health and safety, and the wider engineering principles behind our work.
At the same time, most of my development has come from being involved in real projects - learning directly from experienced engineers, tackling new challenges, and seeing how designs are implemented on site. This combination of formal learning and practical experience has really accelerated my growth. I’m constantly picking up new technical knowledge, but also improving soft skills like communication, organisation, and teamwork.
