Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at JLR?
I was an interesting journey of 2 years. Overall I got to acquire valuable skills in different teams as I went on rotations, however, rotating to other areas of the business was a difficult process as it was not encouraged. I really enjoyed and appreciated all the professional development workshops, trainings and courses I got to do.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
First 6 months I worked in an engineering lab where my deliverables were not defined, neither it was structured which put me in a difficult position as I just started my graduate scheme. So I proactively sought my own tasks and learnings, as I received very little hands-on experience. My 2nd rotation was in sustainability which was the best 6 months I had. I got to lead a project delivery and also was actively working on sourcing projects to meet the net zero target. 3rd rotation was tackling delivery challenges which was interesting, however, it was not fruitful due to it being a new team. My last rotation was again in a sustainability team where I really enjoyed working on LCA model, which was the delivery from the first sustainability team. I got to have a full circle experience and become a user for it.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
3/5
It varied depending on which team I was in for my rotation. Some teams trusted me with actual business responsibilities and tasks, whereas in other teams I was not given appropriate jobs. I was always valued within my teams and they made me feel welcomed. I understood the graduate title/role might have been the limiting factor for some to actually allow me to work or deliver something independently, but this wasn't always the case, so it was possible to entrust me with genuine business tasks.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
2/5
I was part of another graduate scheme in a different company, so that actually enables me to compare the compensation package. To be honest, this graduate scheme's compensation package is not competitive enough. Half hour daily lunch was not paid. Business trips are not supported at all unless it's critical. Some graduates in commercial area of the business got to go on international placements/rotations whereas engineering grads are not even encouraged to go outside engineering. Private health was advertised, but it has not been operating and it also requires you to go on a monthly subscription. There is no dental package offered. Employee development allowance was closed off during my time as a graduate, which would have allow me some amount towards CPD. There is only 20% discount of merch. There is no budget for graduates as many were recruited. I would have preferred quality over quantity being prioritised.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
Being proactive has helped me in gathering knowledge and experience to where I envision my career to be.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
Ashorne Hill Modules were extremely helpful and I think that is something every employee should do at the start of their role. It prepares you professionally and makes you aware of yourself and your surroundings, if you take in the information well and apply it. Day-to-day role varied for me, where after the initial training in each team, I got to partake in tasks and activities, but again, in certain levels. I got to acquire Six Sigma Yellow Belt which was very useful and something I was interested in.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
I always received great support from my managers, mentors and early career coordinators.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
In some team, I got to do remote work which really supported my mental health and wellbeing. For someone with PTSD and recurring depression, it helped me immensely. However, some teams required me to be in office 4 days a week which drained me completely and I was quite frustrated as I relied on public transport. Not all sites are accessible by public transport, with a realistic commute. I have received mental health support through Occupational Health, where got to start EMDR therapy, however, it stopped abruptly due to their personnel being away.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
3/5
It depends on teams and the culture that they have established over time. Most teams felt very positive and empowering and understanding of individuals and their circumstances. However, in some teams there are a lot of divisions which makes it difficult to navigate. In HQ, the environment is always very festive and strong and there is a sense of belonging. That needs to be there for all sites and teams.
How would you rate JLR initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
The overall environment here is quite inclusive and very diverse for sure. JLR celebrates all cultures ad festivities which creates a wholesome environment, but that is mostly in HQ.
How would you rate JLR CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
JLR offers 2 paid volunteering days. I have really enjoyed the sustainability summit days in JLR where they showcased startups and businesses with incredible innovations to make the world sustainable.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall, it may not be the best graduate programme, but for professional roles JLR is a great place to work. The latest technology and innovations are something to be a part of. The pay might not be great for early careers, but they are working on it and trying to improve. For professional roles, the salary and bonuses are competitive. The employee privilege scheme is also an attractive perk for professional roles.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
I was matched to work with batteries for EV, which was a great match for someone with my background.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to JLR?
- Make sure to know what your Home Team does before you join; if it does not align within the first couple weeks, be proactive and raise it.
- Be transparent with your circumstances and know their expectations
- Tailor your own graduate scheme to suit your career ambitions and if you have the passion, you will receive the support
