Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at JLR?
Extremely positive, it was one of the highest paying graduate roles I came across. My manager is very easy-going and helpful, which is a massive plus. There's a lot of opportunity here to do what you'd like to do and to show yourself off, but it also doesn't punish people who aren't as outgoing and just want to do their job, I like that there are both options. The work culture is very progressive and relaxed, WFH is common here and I don't feel pressured to work long hours or anything like that.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
During the graduate scheme you get to go on "placements", which is where you move around the business and spent anywhere from 3-6months in different areas of your choosing (down to manager discretion). I've really enjoyed this aspect, as my "home team" is exteriors, which is a collection of parts that make up the outside of the car, but I am more interested in robots and sustainability and I've been able to go on placements in those areas, which is something I didn't think I'd be able to do.
In my home team my responsibilities were doing things like design reviews of parts, which is checking parts against a specification sheet to make sure they pass all the specs. Designing and conduction tests, which is one of my favourite things to do, it is start to finish and quite similar to university labs.
In sustainability I was doing lots of research into future technologies and writing/delivering reports on these technologies and how they might be used by JLR.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
I do feel like I contribute work and that my work is trusted by others.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Great pay for engineering in the midlands. Starting bonus and yearly salary increases are great, opt into the increased working week!
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
Lots of variety means I feel ready for any direction my career goes in.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
Good formal training provided and opportunity to do more always available. Once you get into a rhythm of day to day work training does drop off, but learn more on the job anyway.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
Line manager and Buddy are great, extremely approachable and helpful, never make me feel stupid for any questions I ask, even a year into my scheme.
Early careers team has left a bit to be desired.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
Always encouraged to go home on time, flexible for WFH as long as there is nothing going on in the office. Once I clock out I don't worry about work.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Always encouraged to go home on time, flexible for WFH as long as there is nothing going on in the office. Once I clock out I don't worry about work. CEO won an award for most LGBTQ+ positive UK CEO, so an inclusive culture.
How would you rate JLR initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
CEO won an award for most LGBTQ+ positive UK CEO, so an inclusive culture. Always doing events at the main offices to promote smaller cultures/backgrounds.
How would you rate JLR CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
I have done some charity work on behalf of JLR, but there's not a ton to do. I know they are very involved with helping others by doing things like providing vehicles to Red Cross for example, but this is quite far removed from me.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
For engineering, it was one of the best paying jobs, the work culture and relaxing atmosphere seems to beat out a lot of other places my friends work at. And JLR has given me so many chances to try out new things.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
2/5
Probably the biggest issue, "Mechatronics graduate" is what the role was sold as, but my job has nothing to do with mechatronics, my home team mainly works in plastic moulded parts, completely different. I spoke with HR about this and they said they "didn't realise it meant anything and that it was just a cool engineering word". But once you get in you can move around a bit to meet your own expectations.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to JLR?
Learn company values, read up about stuff on the website, take notes into interview, these are things I did.
