Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
First year is spent building up the individual and teaching them how to present and manage themselves to clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders, as well as session to expose different disciplines to different ways of working through rotation and workshops.
The second year is spent expanding on leadership qualities, and allowing those willing to step forward into a role that encourages the considerations of others, as well as your own.
Each years learning comes through work experience (what you are actually paid to do), online sessions, residentials in Brathay (practical application) and networking opportunities put on by the Early Careers team.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I oversee Health and Safety, which is a vital part of Balfour Beattys license to operate. We work in high risk, high pressure environments that present several risks that may not be obvious to others. How we manage this is vital in ensuring everyone goes home safe.
On top of this, I oversaw Quality Control and Assurance, General Site Management, Environmental Management and other responsibilities
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
I feel valued as a result of the trust my team and managers put in me to oversee tasks that can be critical to progressing works on site.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
In PDRs I have had conversations around taking certain skills to more advanced levels and also been suggested to work on other skills that may be beneficial to my future career like presentation skills and conflict management etc.
Experience & Company Culture
How is the support you receive?
Balfour have developed an amazing team that onboards the early careers through the entire process, as well as the new EC+ that I am now on. They will ensure that - even if you are asking the wrong person - they will get the question to someone who knows and get a response back to you. This can be anything from HR issues to college courses for apprentices etc.
Line Managers are also great, they themselves get bundles of support on how best to take you on and develop you.
How is your work-life balance?
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
Social impact team help bring events to the forefront and how we can better improve our own wellbeing as well as surrounding communities.
