Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
Really good experience with a structured programme to nurture Early Careers.
First year is spent building up the individual and teaching them how to present and manage themselves to clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders, as well as session to expose different disciplines to different ways of working through rotation and workshops.
The second year is spent expanding on leadership qualities, and allowing those willing to step forward into a role that encourages the considerations of others, as well as your own.
Each years learning comes through work experience (what you are actually paid to do), online sessions, residentials in Brathay (practical application) and networking opportunities put on by the Early Careers team.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
As a site based engineer, I am responsible for the technical bridging between design and delivery. I need to be able to understand drawings and engineering concepts that are presented and navigate the best course for bringing that concept to life.
I oversee Health and Safety, which is a vital part of Balfour Beattys license to operate. We work in high risk, high pressure environments that present several risks that may not be obvious to others. How we manage this is vital in ensuring everyone goes home safe.
On top of this, I oversaw Quality Control and Assurance, General Site Management, Environmental Management and other responsibilities
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I like to think I have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies which can be daunting but rewarding and means I can be very involved, particularly when things can be linked to one another.
I feel valued as a result of the trust my team and managers put in me to oversee tasks that can be critical to progressing works on site.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
The salary is fairly decent for a grad job, but when you include the cost of a company car, subsistence (if staying away from home) and other expenses being paid for it works out as a very competitive renumeration package.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I like to think I have performed well in my grad role and as a result my managers have allowed me to pursue steps in shaping my career as I would like, with courses and additional leave to attend workshops on things like professional development, site management etc. They are also very proactive with training, and will give you the necessary course to allow you to further your day to day role.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
Balfour will encourage both.
In PDRs I have had conversations around taking certain skills to more advanced levels and also been suggested to work on other skills that may be beneficial to my future career like presentation skills and conflict management etc.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
I can almost feel overwhelming the amount of support you can receive!
Balfour have developed an amazing team that onboards the early careers through the entire process, as well as the new EC+ that I am now on. They will ensure that - even if you are asking the wrong person - they will get the question to someone who knows and get a response back to you. This can be anything from HR issues to college courses for apprentices etc.
Line Managers are also great, they themselves get bundles of support on how best to take you on and develop you.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
I am comfortable with it as I get home every night but understand the long days might not be for everyone on a site based role. I take it as extended learning that is beneficial to Early Careers and will allow for a more flexible approach to work life balance later in your career.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
There has been an increased emphasis on wellbeing since I have joined and Balfours are pioneers in that respect. Their Value Everyone scheme is diligently implemented at every level to ensure a well-maintained culture on sites.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Again, as a company pro-active in this field they run regular events aimed at diversity and inclusion.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Plenty on offer.
Social impact team help bring events to the forefront and how we can better improve our own wellbeing as well as surrounding communities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are expanding at unforeseen rates in the Power industry, and their reputation as the #1 construction company in the UK makes it an easy sell.
The fact they can also offer such diverse job roles in different regions, sectors, and disciplines makes them an easy choice too for those still trying to figure out what profession works best for them.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
Was made well aware of expectations and they will never put you in a situation they wouldn't think you are prepared for.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Don't be afraid to get things wrong! They are looking for a sound and sensible approach to a problem, not the exact answer.
