Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?
It has been a very steep learning curve but very comforting to know there is a huge amount of support available not just within the specific job role but also with the employee assistance programme and the many great benefits you can sign up to such as healthcare, dental insurance, eat-out vouchers etc. A fantastic experience and everyone is so friendly and welcoming and helpful.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My main responsibilities have included environmental inspections on project sites, providing support and advice to project teams on environmental matters, environmental monitoring (noise, dust, vibration), tracking waste produced from projects, communicate with suppliers and sub-contractors to implement more environmentally friendly tech, materials and ways of working, delivering training and tracking projects carbon emission through carbon footprinting tool.
The element I enjoy the most is speaking to people, delivering training and doing monitoring tasks as I started delivering training having very little confidence and being extremely nervous but I really enjoy being knowledgeable and capable to deliver training as it gives me a huge confidence boost which feels great - Pushing myself out of my comfort zone gives me a feeling of pride and purpose.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I have been given responsibility of a number of projects and can share good practice case studies with my team and also with the wider business. Having a voice makes me feel super valued.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
Great benefits and a very competitive graduate salary. Another bonus to this is with the Early Careers scheme you get a mid-year pay rise as well as the end of year pay rise, so 2 pay rises a year. The benefits are varied and can be opted into based on what you want or see as relevant to you. I bought a few extra days holiday which was brilliant.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The Early Careers Programme I feel really sets you up for a professional career in a business that values you. The different modules within the programme focus on leading yourself, working on behaviours like valuing everyone, making a difference, talking positively and collaborating relentlessly. Adopting these behaviours into your career will stand you in good stead for your future.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
There are lots of opportunities for formal training with the internal training platform however the majority of your knowledge building and skill improvements come from being on the job - experiential learning. There are always opportunities to do something different and expand your knowledge and skillset.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
The support has been great. Not required much support from HR although when I did, it was fast, informative and really helpful. My line manager has always been incredibly supportive and has pushed me to do new things and take on more responsibility which is just what I was looking for. I did not really have much of a mentor or buddy however at the end of the 2 year programme I am now a buddy/mentor for someone just starting the programme which is great to know that that service is being ramped up.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
I feel I have a very good work-life balance which allows me to focus on my out of work activities and commitments without compromising on the amount of time I spend in work. I can leave work early on some days if I need to, knowing that I can make up the hours when it's suitable for me.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Welcoming, inclusive and incredibly supportive. The general vibe I get is that people higher up want everyone to succeed. It's a very nurturing environment to work and to be. Everyone is super helpful. You feel valued within the company. Lean, expert, trusted, safe and sustainable.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
The affinity networks are a fantastic set up that have a collective voice for a diverse characteristic. Each network works with the business and helps raise awareness of issues, increases understanding across the business and provides a safe space for people to share their experiences. Nobody is left out so it doesn't matter your gender, race, sexuality, ability, background, you are given a voice.
How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
The company really stands out with charitable contributions as well as volunteering - every employee gets 2 paid volunteering days a year. There are also lots of events to partake in throughout the year that will raise money for chosen charities
