Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
An Insight Day at Irwin Mitchell, being the final stage of the training contract recruitment process. The day was well structured with ample opportunity to get to know fellow candidates, employees of the firm and have breaks.
The spotlight sessions were beneficial for gaining introductory insight into various practice areas, and to ask experienced lawyers questions related to their job role.
The assessment aspect was relaxed and welcoming. The group discussion was accessible to people of all backgrounds and experiences. The final interview was also relatively relaxed and comfortable, with the interviewers being welcoming too.
At lunch we were taken to a restaurant with our interviewers and other candidates, which was a good opportunity to settle nerves before the assessments and build some rapport.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was welcoming and friendly. Naturally, talking to qualified lawyers who are industry-leading in their respective areas was intimidating, but most were very welcoming and friendly, putting us at ease.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell
Researching the firm is essential. Reading cases that interest you, understanding how the business operates, understanding the firm's goals and achievements, as well as how their values align with your own.
Showcasing and being able to evidence your passion for the firm and practise area (or at least stream you wish to pursue i.e. for individuals or for businesses), is very important.
Apply the skills you have gained with previous experiences (both law and non-law are fine), and how they are transferable to a role as a trainee solicitor.
