Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Latham & Watkins?
My training contract was extremely fulfilling - given the firm's "learn on the job" approach to training, I was given high levels of responsibility on deals which allowed me to hone and develop my skills at an unprecedented rate.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
During my training contract, I have sat in Project Development & Finance, Banking, Corporate and Restructuring & Special Situations. Common trainee tasks include coordinating CPs directly with the client and opposing counsel, reviewing and drafting CPs, security documents (for finance transactions), legal opinions, working closely with junior associates to coordinate signings/closings, and generally supporting the deal team on the transaction. On contentious matters, traineees get involved in drafting letter correspondence and conducting case law/legislative research.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Latham & Watkins to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I was given high levels of responsibility and associate-level tasks during my training contract, which helped me learn and develop quickly and allowed me to ascertain if I can foresee myself working in law in the future. Latham's culture is also incredibly supportive and inclusive - never have I once felt "left-out" and different types of support is always available (not just on transactions, but also in other forms, such as mental/health support). Latham is also a full-service firm and a market leader across various transactional/contentious practice areas, which makes it the best place to train.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Latham & Watkins?
I would highly recommend researching the deals/work that Latham & Watkins does to gain a sense of the work that we do, the services that we offer, and whether it might be something they are interested in. I would also recommend speaking to as many people from the firm as possible, to gain a sense of the firm's culture and its people.
