Chemical Synthesis Student Review

Given responsibility for a chemical project and full planning and execution of lab work. Technical reports were written, involving data analysis as required. Could also involve making presentations about this work, which could be communicated to seniors.
Team responsibilities involved adhering to safety measures and restocking consumable items.

After the initial training period, yes, I was the only person responsible for my project and its direction, and all safe handling of scientific equipment used.

Hard lab skills, like pouring chemicals, carrying out scientific techniques. Learning how to use unfamiliar equipment.
General workplace skills: time management (in and out of the lab), project management, collaboration and metacognition were all developed further.

Lots, especially from my supervisor, but equally from wider members of the team, who were always on hand to help.

Exceptionally friendly and positive people, who are pioneers of the growth mindset. Staff appear to love their jobs, and someone leaving surprises everyone!

I really enjoyed this year. As everyone (even the catering team) appears to be their best selves at work, this mindset has shaped how I view workplace attitudes. Social opportunities were advertised and attended. The established student placement scheme has allowed opportunities to present work (project and non-project based) to each other, in supportive formats.
