Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The role involved rotating across six desks: EM, Equities, Repo, FX, DCM and Rates, with two weeks spent on each. It was predominantly a shadowing and learning internship, where I aimed to absorb as much information as possible within the short time spent on each desk. My main tasks included writing market commentary for the morning calls, as well as completing ad hoc tasks to support the desk, an example being comparing Peruvian PPI vs US CPI to help price an inflation swap.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
The experience varied across desks; on some, I was primarily there to learn, while on others I was given real responsibility and the chance to add value. Since interns are not authorised to trade or speak directly with clients, there are natural limitations to what one can do in a Sales & Trading internship. That said, I came up with a trade idea that was approved and added to the trade ideas book with real DV01 risk. To my knowledge, this is super rare at other banks and demonstrates the level of trust placed in interns and how highly they are regarded at the Bank.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
There are so many people at the bank who dedicate a lot of time to interns. I’m naturally very curious, and while at some banks this might come across as annoying with all my questions, everyone at Scotia was extremely supportive and keen to help me learn.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture was class. I built strong relationships with many people across the rotations during my internship. There was an incredible balance of being both highly social and highly intelligent. The MDs were also very accessible and friendly towards interns, and I always felt comfortable approaching them with any questions I had.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I was super excited going into the internship, and it did not disappoint! I loved it—found markets incredibly interesting, and everyone was very welcoming. On top of that, there were far more socials than I expected, so despite the longer hours than a '9-5' it was definitely a work-hard, play-hard internship, which I really enjoyed.
