Global Capital Markets Review

I spent the summer in Global Capital Markets at Scotiabank in London, rotating across FX sales, FX trading, STIR, rates and DCM.
Day to day it was early starts, in before the market opened, reading the overnight moves and then the morning meeting. From there it moved quickly. You'd be juggling several pieces of work at once across different desks, often for people who hadn't spoken to each other, so a lot of it was working out what actually mattered and in what order.
The part I hadn't expected was how much of it was networking. Nobody hands you work on a rotation, so you have to go and find it, which means introducing yourself to people who are busy and being useful enough that they give you something the next time. That was probably the steepest bit of the learning curve, and the most useful.

It's a smaller platform than some of the bulge brackets, which meant there wasn't a layer of analysts between me and the desk. Work I was given went to the people who'd asked for it rather than being checked and rewritten on the way. That's a different kind of pressure, because if something's wrong it's visible.

A huge amount from HR and from all of the members of the desk. The great part about this internship is that full time workers actually invest in you and are keen to get to know you and develop your skills.
