Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
On a day-to-day basis, my role involved researching and analysing Regulatory Sandbox and Supercharged Sandbox applications, drafting reports such as Non-Firm Reports (NFRs) for internal and external meetings, and preparing briefing materials. I regularly supported senior meetings by drafting minutes and summarising key discussions. I also worked closely with colleagues across the Innovation division, contributing to ongoing projects such as the RegTech taxonomy, the FCA AI Lab website, and the Open Finance report. Alongside project work, I prepared presentations on consumer finance and investment trends and helped create practical resources, such as the onboarding pack for new joiners.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a significant level of responsibility throughout my internship. I was trusted to conduct in-depth analysis of Regulatory Sandbox and Supercharged Sandbox applications, produce Non-Firm Reports for senior panel meetings, and draft minutes for high-level board discussions. I also contributed to outputs, such as assisting the team by creating an Open Finance report, and advanced ongoing projects like the RegTech taxonomy and FCA AI Lab website. Having ownership of these tasks not only gave me exposure to meaningful work but also showed the trust the team placed in me to deliver accurate and impactful outputs.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I developed several new skills during my internship. I learnt how to produce Non-Firm Reports, which involved actively listening, capturing key details, and presenting them clearly. I also became much more confident using Excel and explored a range of its features to support analysis. Beyond technical skills, I gained a deeper understanding of finance and the landscape of innovative firms shaping the sector. I also learnt how to effectively reprioritise my work in line with shifting deadlines, which helped me manage tasks more efficiently.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received continuous support and guidance throughout my internship. My line manager was always available to provide direction and feedback, and I was also assigned a buddy who I could go to for day-to-day questions. Beyond that, everyone in the department was approachable and willing to help, which made it easy to reach out whenever I faced any issues. This supportive environment gave me the confidence to take on responsibility while knowing I had guidance when needed.
