Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

It involves working with client companies and doing day-to-day tasks around the administration of their pension schemes. This could revolve around transfer values, pension calculations, and so on. We also work as a part of a group towards a dedicated intern project. We also have an option to volunteer for Actuarial Modelling work during our internship.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

It was a lot more compared to my previous internship in Data & Analytics in a UK bank. From the second week onwards I had the responsibility of doing calculations on my own, and writing emails to the clients about the same, albeit after a thorough process of 3-stage independent reviewing. And this was for a range of clients. It was definitely satisfying as it made me feel I'm a real part of their day-to-day work.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I got the opportunity to apply theoretical degree knowledge to the work I was doing, as well as communicating technical info to non-technical audiences. This was the first time I actually understood the importance of time-management and juggling work priorities.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A lots. From the grads to the very seniors, everyone was approachable and friendly, and willing to explain stuff you might be struggling with. Training was quite comprehensive and detailed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Everyone was really friendly and approachable. They are really flexible about workload and keep in mind whether you're sitting exams or have a busy calendar. I felt really welcomed into the firm since day 1 and felt right at home.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed the eight weeks I spent here, from learning to doing real work to the socials, everything was fun. It did get a bit challenging when there was a bunch of dummy exercises to do towards the end of the internship, but apart from that everyone was really fun to talk to and good company.
