Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I usually start my day by setting up a to-do list to keep on top of everything I need to get done. My time is normally split between client work and technical work. Client tasks can include things like drafting emails, writing policies or calculating transfer values, while the technical side can involve year-end accounting and testing Power BI or Excel functions. I also have regular catch-ups with my client teams, manager and buddy, which makes it a really supportive environment - you’re never left feeling stuck because there’s always someone willing to help and guide you as you learn.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
The most surprising thing for me has been just how much responsibility I was given as an intern. I didn’t expect to be trusted to work on real client calculations and contribute to projects so early on, but it’s been really rewarding to see the impact of my work.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a lot of training in my first few weeks which prepared me to take on meaningful work during the internship. I also had regular check ins with a people manager, a buddy and my own co-intern colleagues. Anytime I was set any work everyone was happy to hop on a call and answer any questions I had. No question felt like a silly question at Hymans.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Hymans Robertson to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Hymans Robertson
My biggest advice would be to just go for it and not worry if your background isn’t the “typical” one. I study Economics at SOAS, which isn’t a Russell Group university, and I was worried I’d be behind since most people come from maths or actuarial science backgrounds. But honestly, Hymans teach you everything you need to know and never make you feel silly for not understanding something as everyone is so supportive and willing to help. I’d also say make the most of every opportunity, whether that’s getting involved in projects, joining social events or shadowing other business units, because you really do get out of the internship what you put into it.
