Actuarial Private Intern Review

On a day-to-day basis, my workload was always different, and I think that reflects the dynamic nature of the actuarial industry. I was placed on two clients, and the work I did for them ranged helping draft agendas, taking minutes at meetings, to updating annual actuarial reports. On the technical side, I was placed on accounting and transfer value workstreams. Whenever I felt like I didn't have much going on, I would reach out to my buddy or people manager, and they would always find work for me to do.

I was given a lot of responsibility, which I loved. Throughout the internship, it was made increasingly clear how the pieces of work I would be doing would be used. All my work was checked before being submitted, and through feedback given I was able to continuously improve.

I've definitely been able to develop my technical skills, specifically within excel, alongside gaining an insight into using exodus (cashflow generating software), and NAV+ (funding updates). In addition to this, we were given a very comprehensive set of training sessions in our first week which gave me a context of the work done in pensions. Through this, I was able to learn how to calculate CETVs (transfer values) which was a workstream I was on in the internship.
Through our internship group project, in which we worked together on improving some of the grad training, I was able to develop my teamwork skills, alongside my general confidence on presenting.

I was given a great amount of support. Whenever I had questions, my buddy or checkers were more than happy to sit down and discuss any questions I had about work. I think this really contributed to the friendly working atmosphere Hymans has.

The company culture is extremely inclusive and welcoming. I always looked forward to going into office, as all the employees were friendly - even at a more senior level, which was pleasantly surprised me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. To be honest, in all areas, it surpassed all my expectations. It is clear that the firm values its employees, and there is a great working culture. On a social level, there are frequent opportunities that the firm creates to get to know other members in the team.
On a professional level, the work that was given to me challenged me in a positive way. I do feel I was able to develop both professionally in terms of my skills, but also personally in terms of improving my confidence.
