Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked in actuarial private and my time was split between the technical team and client team. We were given 2-3 clients each and picked up work for these clients as and when they came in. I handled tasks like transfer values, funding updates, and asset procedures. I was also assigned to the accountant stream so I worked on a large accounting task for another client. For the technical allocation, we were encouraged to ask for work in areas we found interesting, we were allowed to say what kind of work we wanted to do to try things out.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
We were given as much responsibility as we wanted. We were asked if we wanted to get involved in tasks and would then be trained if we were interested. You could then complete the work independently but still had support from different sources to help you with this. I was involved with real client work very early on and trusted to complete this work.

We were given endless support from the team and always encouraged to ask questions. We were given a buddy who was a new grad, and also had a people manager to go to for support, but I felt comfortable going to anyone on my team for help as everyone was so kind and welcoming.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
In the Edinburgh office, the culture was extremely friendly and relaxed. Everyone would chat and have lunch together, it was a very enjoyable environment to work in. The dress code was also casual so it didn't feel like a strict office. We went for some team lunches and also had social events like bowling.
