Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was a summer intern with the Actuarial Private team. It involved both client work and technical work. You also work on a group project which has a presentation in the final week, and the opportunity to pick up any projects going. For myself this included picking up a PowerBI project, in which we used t to visualise timesheet data for an ATT (Actuarial Technical Team) workstream, and another project in which we created functions using VBA in Excel.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. I was amazed at the variety of work that I was able to get involved in. This included transfer values, trivial commutations, updating manuals, drafting guidance, and funding updates. These were all meaningful client tasks that were enjoyable too. There is a doer/checker/reviewer system so even if you found the work difficult and don't think you done it quite right, it was always going to be checked through by 2 other people before getting issued back to the client.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received so much support and guidance. Everyone at Hymans is incredibly friendly and always happy to help. If I was stuck on a piece of work always felt comfortable asking someone on my client team, or if it was a more general question I could always go to my buddy or people manager - both of whom were incredibly kind and helpful.

The culture was honestly fantastic. The company values - specifically friendly and partnering were so evident.
