Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
During my internship with the IFS team at Hymans Robertson, I had the opportunity to work across a variety of projects, which gave me a broad understanding of the team’s work. A large part of my role involved analysing Matching Adjustment (MA) survey responses from UK insurers, where I compared industry trends, regulatory insights, and firm-level practices. I also supported longevity modelling work, updating tools and reports with Club Vita 2025 curves.
My work was a mix of data analysis, reviewing industry and regulatory material, and collaborating with colleagues to understand the technical context behind tasks. I also contributed to other projects such as HY25 disclosure analysis, preparing commentary and improving presentation slides for surveys and workshops. Alongside this, I regularly joined catch-ups with colleagues and attended learning sessions, which helped me connect the technical work to the bigger picture of how insurers manage risk and capital.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was trusted with a good level of responsibility throughout my internship. I worked directly on client-related projects such as curating client specific decks for Matching Adjustment survey analysis and longevity model updates, where accuracy and attention to detail were essential. I was also given ownership of specific tasks, like drafting commentary and improving presentation materials, which made me feel that my work was genuinely contributing to the team’s outputs.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed both technical and professional skills during my internship. On the technical side, I strengthened my ability to analyse data and interpret results through work on the Matching Adjustment survey and longevity model updates. I also built confidence in working with regulatory material and translating it into clear outputs. I improved my communication skills by discussing complex topics with colleagues, presenting ideas, and contributing to team deliverables. Overall, the internship really helped sharpen my attention to detail and gave me greater confidence working in a consulting environment.
