Actuarial Consulting Intern Review

My role was to act as an actuary on a plethora of client and sometimes specialist teams. Often this meant assisting more qualified actuaries and senior staff members with calculations, accounting and admin work. At first, I was given only small tasks from larger projects to complete, but gradually this grew with my competency. This was the bulk of my day-to-day work, however I also; worked on a intern project, sat in on and presented at external and internal meetings, had calls and meetings with members of various different teams and completed/attended a number of online lessons and seminars.

Largely, all work I completed was unsupervised. Given the technical nature of the work, I think it was difficult for my colleagues to give me projects that were too important or complicated, however this did increase over the internship, albeit gradually.

I've learnt much about actuarial work and pensions, especially given that this area was something of a mystery to me before starting. I've sharpened my excel skills, and my time/project management skills. I also have a greater understanding of finance in general, as my background was not really related to this.

All the staff were very friendly and eager to help me if I had a problem. I feel like a good balance was struck between allowing me to be independent, and offering me help and guidance. There were days where I had relatively little to do or the work was quite dull though.

The general atmosphere of the office was great. It was a little tough at first to socialise, given that I was the only intern, but it didn't take long to start gelling with everyone. Given that full-time workers were hybrid, and I was full-time in the office, there were days though where the office was quite quiet, but I didn't really mind this.

I really enjoyed my internship. I've developed good relationships with my peers, I had a great time at intern events and I enjoyed life in Manchester.
