Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Working in the Compliance & AFC division, my role was to assist in the execution of risk assessments for the Bank's non-financial risks. This included maintaining and developing systems used for reporting, ad-hoc admin tasks using Excel etc, and contributing to regular reports that were shared with stakeholders.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a fair amount of responsibility and independence during my internship, with tasks fluctuating throughout my time. I rarely had little to do as there was always something to help with, although it can be more of a challenge to get involved in some of the tasks that require more background knowledge.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed my abilities with Excel due to this still being widely used, new skills such as Vlookups, using and checking formulas. Aside from that I developed professional communication skills, time management, and some project management.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The early careers team are very supportive and responsive on any issues. I also had great guidance from my managers who were very keen to help me grow and develop, whilst we had a number of trainings and events put on throughout the internship which added even more chances to learn.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Company culture seems to be really positive. Everyone has been friendly and senior managers are often willing to give their time to speak to junior staff. There is a focus on hiring people who are kind and good to work with. We also had plenty of social opportunities as part of the internship which were a lot of fun. Employee resource groups often run events celebrating different causes, cultures, and religions too.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my placement. I learned a lot during my time here, and the people I worked with were fantastic. Some of the work can be admin-heavy but there also seems to be a focus on improving automation, meaning my experience could be different going forward. The socials and learning opportunities away from desk work were exceptional, and management were very supportive in helping us to learn.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Deutsche Bank to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Deutsche Bank
Show initiative and openness, it seems that there is a big focus on the type of person being hired. You can learn a lot of things once you start, but being someone who is willing to try any task and be easy to work with is very important. Knowledge of Excel and coding will help too. Try to show why the Bank stands out against others to fit your career objectives/focus.
