Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I currently work in the Backend development within my team with plans to move to front-end halfway though my placement. Me and my team are in part of a global team where we are upgrading a legacy system. My day to day roles varies. My first weeks were spent doing training and learning how to use Spring Boot and Maven as well as things like Kafka. While doing those I would also work on agile stories from our sprint so I can put what I learnt into practice. Now that I have better knowledge in these areas, I spend most of time working though my stories. My team encourages me to use my own problem solving skills and give it a go when I encounter an issue but if that doesn't work, they are always there to help me and explain the problem and solution in depth which allows me to understand it more so I can overcome these problems on my own if I ever face them again.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As you expect they didn't give me much responsibility at the start as they wanted me to understand everything first about our sector and team (how the team functions, code structure, etc.). As I learned more, they gave me more responsibility and more challenging tasks which I love as I get to test my coding and problem solving skills.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
As you expect it is quite a big company and even though our team is quite small, we have members across the globe in it, with the majority in Belfast. Yet I feel quite close with all my team members. Everyone in the Belfast office are very friendly and great to talk to.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I am currently still doing my placement but I really enjoy it, I thought I wouldn't like it due to the size of the company but I really enjoy it. If they offered me a graduate role I would most likely take it! The main thing I wanted when picking a placement was the ability to do actual coding to the project as well as feeling busy (but not too busy), and I feel busy as I am working though my stories, which is a feeling I love !

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Citi to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Citi
Like any placements, try and do your best in University as well as working on coding projects in your spare time, this will make you above the rest. Don't worry about not knowing certain coding languages. During your placement you will be taught certain languages, depending on the team you are put in. Just make sure you show in the interview and your CV that you have an eager to learn, a love for programming, and understanding about agile software development.
