Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Supporting the analysis of new drug substances using techniques like liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and NMR. Day-to-day, I prepare and analyse samples, operate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments, interpret results, and document findings in accordance with strict regulatory standards such as Good Laboratory Standard (GLS) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). My role also includes collaborating with colleagues on method development, participating in team meetings, and following all safety and wellbeing protocols.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I gradually took on more responsibility as my confidence and technical skills developed. Whilst I started with close supervision, I was soon trusted to manage my own experiments, troubleshoot issues, and ensure my work met regulatory standards.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
The placement enabled me to learn several new skills and further develop those I brought from university. I gained hands-on experience with advanced analytical instruments that I had only studied theoretically before. I learnt how to troubleshoot equipment problems and optimise analytical methods, which sharpened my practical problem-solving abilities. I also developed a stronger understanding of the regulatory standards required in industry, particularly GLS and GMP, and improved my skills in scientific documentation.
Beyond technical development, I significantly improved my communication, teamwork, and organisational skills. Adapting to a busy industrial environment helped me become more flexible and better at managing my time. Altogether, the placement gave me valuable opportunities to broaden my skill set and deepen my expertise for future scientific work.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a substantial amount of support and guidance throughout my placement. When I first joined, comprehensive formal training and onboarding sessions helped me adjust to the company’s standards and safety procedures. During my early weeks, I worked closely with experienced colleagues and supervisors who provided step-by-step guidance in laboratory practices and compliance requirements. As I grew more confident, I could work independently but always felt comfortable reaching out for advice whenever I faced new challenges or needed a second opinion.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture and general atmosphere were welcoming, collaborative, and supportive. There was a strong emphasis on teamwork, open communication, and mutual respect. Employees were encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and contribute to projects regardless of their level of experience. However, as in any workplace, conflicts and disagreements occasionally occurred. There was also a genuine commitment to safety and wellbeing. Whilst the company promotes diversity and inclusion, I noticed that some recent changes in policies or practices were less visible and made the atmosphere of inclusivity less apparent. At times, it felt as though these adjustments may have been intentional, which affected the overall sense of belonging within the organisation. This is an area where the company could improve by making changes more visible and actively engaging staff in ongoing efforts to support a truly inclusive atmosphere. This would help ensure that everyone feels equally included. Despite these challenges, I found the workplace to be generally supportive, and the atmosphere was professional yet friendly.
