Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Fully lab based in the quality control department. I was a lab technician in the microbiology department receiving and reading agar plates from a sterile production plant for an oncology drug. Day to day would include me going onto the plants and performing my role of using novel systems to receive samples from personnel, the environment and actual product. I would then read samples to check for any microbial contamination.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was trained thoroughly and once signed off on my training packs I was treated and given the same responsibility as the rest of the permanent team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt a lot of new skills such as understanding how to use certain software and equipment that is used every day in the lab. I have had invaluable insight into the strict procedures and regimented rules required for people to follow in order to prevent contamination and harm to patients. I have learnt basic microbiology training and how to handle in an aseptic way. My communication and professional skills have developed here as being the only intern on my team I have had to socialise and get to know my colleagues and I have created meetings with other people in the campus for career advice which has given me a greater knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and allowed me to network with people.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I have received a lot of support and guidance from my team and manager to help me get signed off on training packs and get the most out of my 12 weeks here at AZ. I was trained to a great standard which allowed me to have the same responsibility as everyone on my team which allowed me to feel like I was really contributing to the team as well as learning from them.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Everyone was so friendly and welcoming from beginning to end. I felt like a part of the team and even when I was training I felt like I was wanted and not causing any added workload on people. General company culture is very positive and friendly. Everyone is clearly very happy in their job and people here are constantly looking for ways to improve the way we work to make things more efficient and a nicer place to work.
