Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I got given a project and over the 12 weeks, I worked to analyse what is in the reaction mixture over different time points using analytical techniques like UPLC, Mass Spectroscopy or NMR. I also come up with different conditions to try and optimise the reaction and ensure that less impurities will form and also to figure out what those impurities could be.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Somewhat responsible. Like responsibility in the lab and returning glassware and equipment after using them for my experiments.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I developed further my analytical skills like UPLC and mass spectroscopy.
I learnt how to use an Easymax 102 and using Biovia draw.
I think I also further developed my lab skills.
I'm also developing my presentation and storytelling skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I've received quite a lot of support during my placement. My line manager schedules 1:1 with me and helps me out a lot with guidance on application, CV and developing skills (she encourages me to access the self-learning resources available to the company to develop my soft skills). She is also very friendly and she also introduced someone in the team as my 'buddy' who I received a lot of help from when I was completing my initial training in the first few weeks. He also showed me around the lab where they worked which was very insightful. My supervisor is also very friendly and helped me out a lot with my project. He gave me a lot of advice and really helped me find a direction with this project.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Everyone was nice, friendly and smart. They taught me a lot of things and showed me around the company and equipment in the labs (which I didn't get to use in my project so it was very cool to see it in action).
