Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Broadly, I was a private bank summer analyst, so assisting Citi Private Bank professionals advise and execute transactions and trades for UHNW individuals. More specifically, I was based on an Alternatives Investments team, working on third-party mutual funds, so my day-to-day tasks involved communicating with fund houses and colleagues from across EMEA & APAC to assist with the onboarding and maintenance of funds. I also shadowed professionals from across the private bank, including portfolio managers, securities traders, investment counsellors and private bankers.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a decent amount of responsibility, independently emailing contacts at the world's biggest asset managers, such as BlackRock & Amundi to gather and convey important information, or assist with client transactions - for example if they were buying into a mutual fund. I was also trusted to work very independently on my own projects for the team, giving frequent updates on their status to my colleagues.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I can only speak highly of the company culture in Citi Private Bank, with everyone being very welcome and open to speaking to the interns. People were keen to get us involved with things, and the flat hierarchal structure supports learning by allowing us to speak to seniors from across the bank - who were very willing to spend time with us whether as a group or individually.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Citi to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Citi
Speak to as many people as you can at the bank before applying - it will give you the insight and info it is impossible to derive from the internet/LinkedIn and any insight you receive into the culture will offer further encouragement to apply.
When applying, make evident you appreciate and admire Citi's flexible working conditions, as this is something they are proud of and really sets them apart from other top banks.
