Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a technology summer analyst I have been working with a team to develop a project that will contribute to the banks long term goals
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was. I was able to get work out within the first week that was a part of my team's project, and my solo project is being led by myself (with support from the team and managers still) and is going to be used in the business once it is released

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have improved my abilities as a software engineer and have been able to learn new languages and apply them to a system that is much more complex and large than that of anything I worked on at university. I also gained a lot more confidence in my work and in my ability to work with others and meet lots of new people.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was assigned a buddy who was a graduate who had previously been a summer intern and could relate to my experiences, and she was there to help with any concerns or general issues. I also had my manager, a graduate on the team and the wider team itself all within reach to talk about my project, learn about the team as a whole, and I was encouraged to interrupt and ask about anything I wasn't sure on whenever I needed it.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone I met was quite relaxed and comfortable/confident with their work. People were quick to hop in and help one another and it didn't seem like there was any culture of discouraging questions or thinking poorly of people who were stuck on something. The bank appears to have a surprisingly flat structure with a few main levels (at least in technology) and it was easy to meet with people far more senior than myself regularly to catch up with them and learn from them.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed the internship overall. I was nervous going into it because I had invested a lot of my time and money into this career path, and had some concerns about what I would do if I didn't like it. I'm glad that it feels like I have been able to confirm that I have chosen a career for myself that makes me feel motivated and fulfilled. I am very happy about the team I was put in too, as I feel like the work they do is really interesting and I have enjoyed seeing it and being a part of it. If provided with the opportunity to return as a graduate, I would like to do so.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Citi to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Citi
During the interview process, the assessment stages had an emphasis on soft skills and general personality as well as technical abilities. While having strong technical skills is important, I think the interview, and the internship itself, pushes you to show your personality off to others and to find out how you fit in the wider team and organisation as a whole. I felt like I was regularly encouraged to think about that through presentations, and through regular catchups with seniors in different areas of the bank.
