Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am based in the office 9-5:30, with an hour for lunch. I have been looking at Ground Investigation data (borehole logs, core photographs, piezometer readings) and extracting relevant useful information to be used for ground water modelling. I have done training using OpenGround and Leapfrog software in order to build and analyse the data. I have been involved in projects based in London, but also those based in the middle east often working with teams spanning different offices across the world.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

The majority of work I was given had a deadline much further away than the time it took to do the work. Everything that I did involving calculations was checked before being sent on to clients, but my work was directly used in client meetings

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have done training for some new software. I think the biggest thing I have learnt is about how a company operates and communication pathways to keep a project moving. I have also emailed some people working in specialties I am interested in and they are happy to have a coffee and a chat.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Even if more senior people are quite busy so have less time to teach/ troubleshoot directly, I have a buddy who is a recent grad who I sit near and I can ask them logistical questions about timesheets etc but they are also working on the same projects as me so are easily available for help and questions!

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

A lot of people have been working here for a long time (or even their whole working life), which means they are committed to the Arup culture. There are lots of interns across the whole office so that is nice. The office is modern and there is a roof garden!

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I found the commute quite long at the start which I think affected my view of the placement. Once I was about 3 weeks in, I wasn't seeking out work all the time and had multiple projects I was helping with and felt I had more purpose, so started to enjoy the placement more. I also understood the work I was doing better so it was less stressful.
