Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Public Health and Plumbing Intern at Arup, I assisted in designing sustainable water, drainage, and sanitation systems for various building projects. Day-to-day tasks included supporting design calculations, working with CAD and BIM software, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. I attended team meetings, site visits, and learning sessions, gaining insight into integrated building services and sustainable design practices while contributing to real-world engineering solutions.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given meaningful responsibility from the start. I contributed to real project work, including assisting with design calculations, reviewing drawings, and preparing technical documentation. My input was valued by the team, and I was trusted to manage tasks independently while still receiving guidance when needed. This level of responsibility helped me develop both technically and professionally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I developed my technical skills in using CAD and BIM software, and improved my understanding of sustainable water system design. I also enhanced my teamwork and communication abilities by collaborating with engineers from different disciplines. Additionally, I gained confidence in interpreting technical drawings and applying design standards, while learning how to contribute effectively to real-world projects within a professional environment.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout the internship. My team was approachable and always willing to answer questions or explain concepts in more detail. I had a dedicated Buddy who provided regular feedback, and there were structured learning sessions that helped build my technical knowledge. The collaborative environment made it easy to learn from others and feel supported while working on real project tasks.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture at Arup was welcoming, inclusive, and collaborative. From day one, I felt like a valued member of the team. The atmosphere was professional but relaxed, with regular social events and team activities that helped build strong working relationships. Overall, it was a supportive environment that encouraged both personal and professional growth.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Arup. The work was engaging and meaningful, and I appreciated the opportunity to contribute to real projects while learning from experienced professionals. The supportive team environment, combined with opportunities for development and site visits, made the experience both rewarding and inspiring. It gave me a clear insight into the industry and confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in building services engineering.
