Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role as an intern is varied according to the projects I work on. Some require using Excel to calculate anchorage and lap lengths of steel in concrete, others require python coding to develop new technologies or improve/assess existing ones.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, the benefit of working with Arup is having the chance to work on real projects, with real clients which comes with its responsibilities and deadlines. But the support network between colleagues and managers is also strong to not allow oneself to feel isolated or over-loaded.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Communication and Networking have really improved both in-person and online. I am also improving my coding and MS Office skills through the projects I work on.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I have received a "buddy" on my first day who is a current graduate employee who helped me a lot to settle in during my first few days and would answer any questions I had about anything at work. I also had many on-boarding courses that also help in terms of digital technologies and organisations.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture is very supportive and hospitable with many colleagues introducing themselves and getting to know you as well. It was also very welcoming in terms of sharing meals or having breaks at the same time and is also relaxed without having any looming pressure from higher-ups or colleagues.

Do not be afraid of joining such a large company because you would find a very welcoming team awaiting. Arup provides the benefits and advantages of being a large corporation without the disadvantages of being very work-intensive and volatile.
